Simple installation for anyone.
Hey, guys. Adam here with americantrucks.com. Today, we're taking a closer look at and installing the Extang Trifecta Signature 2.0 series Tri-Fold Tonneau cover, available for the 2015 to 2018 F-150. If you're looking to pick up a tonneau cover for your own truck bed, there are a ton of options on the market. There's soft roll, roll up, tri-fold, quad-fold, so on and so forth. But if you're looking for a tonneau cover, you wanna keep in mind the quality of materials you're picking up. Now, there are, of course, a lot of really affordable options around the $200 range, but they can be really difficult to install, really inconvenient to use, maybe not as trustworthy as some of the more premium options. This one here is one of the biggest top-of-the-line models that I have personally seen on the F-150 thus far. This particular tonneau cover uses a tri-fold design, giving you access to three portions of your bed at the time. You can fold that back in segments and it is the easiest one I have ever installed. I've installed a lot of different ones in my day and this one, by far, takes the cake. Let me explain why. It's got a canvas high-grade top here that is weather resistant, extremely trustworthy, low profile, and just looks really good. It also gives you a weather-tight seal with pro-grade WeatherTuff seals. What that basically means is, you're getting a really airtight seal against the side bed rails. It's weather resistant and weatherproof so you don't have to worry about any of the weather elements sneaking in and wetting or damaging your cargo. That is extremely crucial when picking up the tonneau cover. You wanna make sure everything inside the bed is well protected. It's also got really high-grade steel brackets going across for added weight support and structure support. Lastly, it's got glass-filled nylon MaxHinges, making sure that you're opening and closing it with trust and ease every single time, something that won't degrade over time. So, again, it's a really long-lasting tonneau cover that gives you a lot of peace of mind. That is something you would really only truly get from a more premium model. Those are made from the biggest and best quality materials. Now, as far as the latching system, that is a really big selling point when it comes to a tonneau cover. You want one that's easy to use and quick to install, both of those things can get checked off with the Trifecta 2.0. This updated series from Extang make sure that the clamps all the way by the top of the bed are easy and trustworthy and very tight. They screw on with a metal hinge that will clamp right down to the side of the bed rails and stay put as long as you want that tonneau cover there. The only time that's coming off is when you want that to be unscrewed. Folding it back once more and then a second time, you'll get your second set of clamps back here by the tailgate. Extremely easy to use and I'll show you guys in just a little bit. Those are more spring-loaded Jaw-Grip clamps. What that basically means is, you'll just pull them down like a spring-loaded clamp and snap it right into place. It is so simple, you'll unlatch it and fold your tonneau back in seconds. This particular one comes in right around the $450 mark. That does sound like a higher price tag for a tonneau cover, especially a tri-fold but keep in mind that this is giving you the best materials available for a tonneau cover. You don't have to worry about a UV resistant or non-UV resistant leather-grained vinyl, something that fades over time and can get ripped easily. This is a really durable canvas material that's a lot tougher than those other vinyl options. In my opinion, this one even looks a little bit better. It's got that true black instead of a faded or off-black. One of the things that guys don't think of when picking up a tonneau cover is fuel mileage and aerodynamics. Without a tonneau cover, there's a lot of drag against the inside back your tailgate, which can slow things down, make it a little more sluggish and affect your mileage overall. Adding a tonneau cover to your truck bed gives you a more streamlined airflow, better aerodynamics, therefore resulting in a small increase in fuel mileage, something to keep in mind when picking up a tonneau cover. Finally, the installation is getting a very simple one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. I'd say it'll take about 15, maybe 20 minutes at the most to get this installed. You don't need any hand tools whatsoever. The only thing that it is recommended to do is give your truck bed a nice clean wash before you get it installed, making sure to put emphasis on cleaning the side bed rails. Other than that, one out of three wrenches, 20 minutes at the most. I wanna take you guys step by step on how that gets done so let's get to it. Now, the first step of the installation is to grab your tonneau cover right out of the box. And this is exactly what it looks like coming out of that box. It's snapped together, folded up just like this. You're gonna take it right out of the box and lay it on the ends of your truck bed. You're gonna go all the way back under the windshield like it would be against the back of your bed. Once you have that in place, you're gonna unfold the whole tonneau cover back to the tailgate and line it up exactly where you want it on the bed itself. After it's all lined up properly, fold it back up without shifting its position and start clamping it down to underneath the bed rails. So step one, we're gonna put it into place. You wanna make sure it's lining up on the back of the bed, even straight across in a straight line, and that it's even on both sides of the bed rails. All right, from here, we like this position, we're gonna unsnap our clamps and fold this back. Now, it looks like you can go back a little bit farther so we're gonna shift it from here, fold it right back up, make sure you don't shift that position. All right, now we're gonna go underneath and use the clamps that are pre-installed to the rails to clamp it to the side of the bed. From there, unfold it one more time and clamp them down again. From here, you wanna slide your clamp all the way over to the edge of the bed rail and loosen that up. Once you open up that clamp, get it latched underneath of your bed rail and tighten up the knob. Once it's tight, you'll see that there's no room to play. That'll give you an airtight, weatherproof seal. Repeat this for the other side. All right, so again, you wanna slide your clamp all the way down to the end of the bed rail, make sure it opens up straight, tucks underneath, and then tighten the knob. Next step here, we're gonna unfold the rest of our tonneau cover, bring this back down. The next clamp is gonna be by our tailgate. So it's the same thing here. We're gonna drop it down, make sure it clamps up nicely. We're gonna bring this other clamp to the opposite ends. Perfect. Now, we can crawl back underneath and clamp them down. All right, now this is where it possibly gets even easier than it was in the first clamp. So this one, you're just gonna fold down and it actually is spring-controlled. So we're gonna slide it as close as we can to hitting that bed rail, clamp it down, lift, and put it right underneath. That's as easy as it is. When you wanna unfold your tonneau cover by the tailgate, you'll drop it down, lift, and go like that. It's really that simple. So again, same thing over here, release the clamp, get it lined up, straighten it out, pull, and clamp it down. Now that the install's taken care of, we can shut our tailgate and we're good to go. Before we finish up here though, I wanted to show you guys how easy this is to use in real time. So if you wanted to open up your truck bed, open up your tailgate, pop down that, pull down and unlatch, switch over to the other side, pull down and unlatch, and now we can start folding. Fold one, fold two and once you have it folded all the way back, there's a strap here on the tonneau cover rail, clip that in and now you can drive with it folded all the way open. There's one on the other side as well. When you wanna open it back up, unstrap, one, two, clamp, clamp, and with those two clamps, you're good to go and shut your tailgate. Now that's gonna wrap up my review and install for the Extang Trifecta Signature Series 2.0 tonneau cover, available for your 2015 to 2018 F-150. You can get yours right here at americantrucks.com.
