      Video Review & Installation

Hey, guys, Adam here with Today, we're taking a quick look at and installing the UnderCover Elite Hinged Tonneau Cover in a textured black finish, available for the 2015 to 2018 F-150. You should be taking a look at this particular tonneau cover if you're looking to stray away from a soft tonneau that rolls or folds. But you might wanna get a hard shell tonneau cover to give you the ultimate protection for the cargo inside of your bed. Some of those tonneau covers out there that are the tri-folds or the quad folds or the soft rolls, they don't completely 100% protect your cargo in case of a break in. Those are pretty easily ripped and can access your cargo. And plus, after a long time, they could rip or fade. With a hard tonneau cover like this, that is not something you have to worry about. This is a solid piece made of a full ABS construction. This is not something that will crack or break over time. It also comes over the lips of both of your bed rails, the tailgate, and the bulkhead at the front end of your bed. I think the textured black finish looks really stealthy, gives it a nice sleek look to the exterior appearance, and it blends in really well with our ruby red truck. Now, they do give you a couple of keys in your kit here since this is a lockable tonneau cover, adding to the safety and security of your cargo. I'm gonna show you guys how this would work. So I'm gonna pop open this cover, unlock it, rotate that, and push it straight up. Now, as you can see, it uses gas-powered struts on both sides to slowly push it up so it doesn't go up too fast and it doesn't close too hard. And those will bolt down straight to the brackets that you'll clamp on to your side bed rails. It is a very easy installation process and this entire kit comes in right around 1100 bucks. This is, obviously, going to be more expensive than your traditional tonneau cover. If you're looking for more safety and security, more weather protection than some of the traditional ones would offer and you don't want something that rolls up or folds up, maybe you want a hard cover that goes straight up, this is a really good solution. UnderCover made a really well-built tonneau cover that covers the entire truck bed, protects everything you have in it, and opens up at a really good angle. There are some hard cover tonneau covers like this one, that are lockable, that won't open at the highest of angles so it doesn't really give you access to put things in your bed that might be a little bit taller. That is typically the one problem or complaint that some people have with hard tonneau covers like this one. Typically, when you open them, you're not really able to store big things. So if you're moving furniture like a couch, something that is a little bit bigger, typically, the angles that this opens up at, won't really allow for those bigger items. So this one here, actually, opens a lot further than some of the ones I've seen and that is a huge plus. Now, to close this, it's as easy as pulling down this convenient rope. Now, before it comes all the way down, I wanted to show you guys it does have an LED light built in. Now, it's not a big light bar that opens up into your truck bed but it is sufficient enough that if you're moving something at night or if you need to get something out of your bed at night, that light can definitely come in handy. So we're gonna shut this down and, as you can see, it comes straight on over the tailgate. It doesn't slam down. It is pretty gentle, and it does have the weatherstripping lining the outside here. So you get to lock it here, pop that closed, and you're good to go. Now, before we move into the installation, guys, I wanted to let you know that it is gonna get one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter and it will take about 30 minutes from start to finish. Now, as far as tools, you only need a ratchet or an impact gun and a 13-millimeter socket. Other than that, just have a helping hand on deck. A helping hand goes a long way. If you have a friend that can help you lift this and put it into place, that can definitely make things a lot easier. It's not the hardest of installs and it's really not even heavy. It is a very lightweight piece of material. The entire thing weighs about 50 pounds. So, again, it is possible to do by yourself, it might just be a little awkward trying to line up the hinges on both sides. With that being said, it being 50 pounds, it can support up to 500 pounds of evenly distributed weight on the top here, which goes a long way for the guys like us located on the East Coast, seeing a lot of snow in the wintery weather months. This is something you can feel comfortable leaving outside. If the snow packs down on top of it, adding a lot of weight, it's something that it can handle up to about 500 pounds evenly distributed. With that said, I wanna walk you through the installation process from start to finish so let's get to it. Tools used for this installation are an impact gun or a ratchet and a 13-millimeter deep socket.First step of the whole process here for our hard cover is to set our brackets in place. We're gonna start here on our passenger side with one of our rear brackets. So there's two rear brackets, one for each side and two front brackets. Starting at the rear by the tailgate, we're gonna place this on our passenger side, just set that up against the rail. You wanna have a measuring tape on deck, as well because you wanna make sure it's in the right position. With the measuring tape pressed up against the back of the bed here, I'm gonna line this up and measure 39-1/2 inches. You wanna make sure the end of this rear bracket is touching 39-1/2 inches. From there, we're gonna make sure it stays in that exact location. We're gonna take one of our clamps and clamp it down at one of the three holes. Now there are three holes, two of them are closer to the tailgate, one's a little spaced out toward the front end. One clamp is gonna go at the front end and then the second clamp is gonna go in one of the two other holes, whichever one is not blocked, closest to the tailgate. Now, once you have the bolt taken out of one of your clamps, you're gonna put it on the inside up against the inside of that truck bed rail, put the bolt through, and start bolting this down. We're gonna thread it by hand. Grab a 13-millimeter socket and tighten it down. And you don't wanna over tighten it, just get a couple of clicks so that it's nice and snug. You don't wanna bend or warp the bracket at all if you overtighten it. All right, with these next two holes, you wanna pick the one that is closest to the tailgate. If this one here on your truck bed is obstructed, if for whatever reason you have something blocking this hole, you can use the next one. But if this hole is open, use the one closest to the tailgate. Again, put your clamp through, put the bolt in, start threading it by hand, grab your socket, get it nice and snug. Perfect. We're gonna do the same thing for the other rear bracket on our driver's side. Next step here is to put on our front bracket. We're gonna start here on our driver side, set into place. You wanna make sure you're using the side-specific brackets. One has a D for driver side, the other one P for passenger. Again, we're gonna have to use our measuring tape. You wanna put it up against the bulkhead under the windshield, measure out to the end of the bracket about 16-1/2 inches. We're gonna have to slide this all the way back here. Now, we can clamp this to the bed, just like we did with the rear, with our two clamps. With the next process, with the clamps, you wanna make sure you're using hole number one for one of the clamps. And then if one of these two holes is blocked, just use the other one. You wanna always make sure you're using the one closest to the bulkhead with the front but if that's obstructed, use the next best one. Now, we can repeat this process for the opposite side. All right, so with the help of a hand, if you can throw this on with your buddy, it'll latch right onto those hooks that I just pre-installed onto our side bed rails. Once you drop it in place, and you see it lined up, you just push back toward the end of the windshield and it will snap into place. From here, what I'm gonna do is lift this up and install our struts. Once you have these brackets set into place and locked, you're gonna rotate this dial here to really put pressure on it and lock them into place. Now, we're doing the same thing on the other side. Now, we can move on to the struts. Now, with the struts, we're gonna place this one side with the purple latch over top of the mounting point on our rear bracket. Once we have that snapped into place, we'll lift up the tonneau cover and we'll snap on the other end. That's snaps right into place. You don't need any tools. And you'll go from the outside, lift up on the cover to snap that other end. Now, repeat that for the other side. All right, now everything is installed, we can shut our tonneau cover and lock it. If you need to put more tension on the locking mechanism for your tonneau cover, it is adjustable up by the tailgate lock. I'll show you that in a second. But, for now, what we're gonna do, you wanna make sure you're shutting your tailgate first and using this pull rope to get this back down. There's, of course, another handle right here and that locks right over top of the lip of your tailgate. Once that comes down, you're given a key and an additional spare, you can open that up and lock it. Cap that off and you're good to go. This, as you can see, very secure, will not open up without this unlocked. So we're gonna pop this back open, that locking mechanism is just a couple of twist knobs right underneath of the lock itself and the handle. So if you need to adjust those, they're there for you. But, for now, lock it up and you're good to go. Well that's gonna wrap up my review and install of the UnderCover Elite Hinged Tonneau Cover with the black textured finish, available for the '15 to '18 F-150. You can get this for any of the truck bed sizes available in the generation. You can get yours right here at
