The main difference between F150 tonneau covers is whether they’re soft covers or hard covers. Soft covers are a vinyl type of material over an aluminum frame, similar to a convertible top. Hard covers, on the other hand, are entirely metal. While more cost-effective, soft tonneau covers are easy to break into with nothing more than a pocketknife. If you’re in a less than ideal area, the best F150 bed cover for you is the hard cover. Unfortunately, accessibility is a common complaint about hard covers. Often in a tri-fold or hinged configuration, you can’t just roll it up like you can with some soft covers. There is a retractable hard cover, but it does take up a lot of real estate which we’ll get into next.
If you have a toolbox, you’ll need to take more care when selecting a tonneau cover. Most covers attached along the length of the bed rails, making them incompatible with toolboxes. The aforementioned retractable metal cover’s drum takes up the space a toolbox would otherwise occupy. Tri-fold covers are usually the best compromise since you can remove the slot next to cabin. The best tonneau cover with a toolbox is one explicitly designed for it.
