    Ask a Question

What is the break in procedures for these brakes?

    JamesF

    • The break in period for the Power Stop Z36 Extreme Truck and Tow 6-Lug Brake Rotor and Pad Kit will be as follows: 5 moderate to aggressive stops from 40 mph down to 10 mph in rapid succession without letting the brakes cool and do not come to a complete stop. If you're forced to stop, either shift into neutral or give room in front so you can allow the vehicle to roll slightly while waiting for the light. The rotors will be very hot and holding down the brake pedal will allow the pad to create an imprint on the rotor. This is where the judder can originate from. Then do 5 moderate stops from 35 mph to 5 mph in rapid succession without letting the brakes cool. You should expect to smell some resin as the brakes get hot. After this is complete, drive around for as long as possible without excessively heating the brakes and without coming to a complete stop (Try for about 5 minutes at moderate speed). This is the cooling stage. It allows the heated resin in the brake pads to cool and cure. After the brakes have cooled to standard operating temperature, you may use the brakes normally.

      Meh

Bought this to replace the OEM brakes because I was going to do some towing. Not sure I really feel a difference with normal driving. Maybe there's a difference when towing, but I didn't do a before and after test. But they sure look pretty. But $400 pretty? I put "afternoon" for installation time because my rotors needed "encouragement" to come off, and I wasn't aware that the rear brake pistons don't compress with a C-clamp like the fronts. So I had to stop and do some research. Basically I would call installation time normal for changing a set of rotors and pads on an F-150.

Minimized brake fade and improved looks

Noticed it almost completely eliminated brake fade when towing and going down steep hills. They look great sitting behind the wheels too.

      2011 F-150 Lariat

Bought the front and rear package, great price. Had them professionally installed by the dealer since I was due for other work on the truck. They followed the break in procedure exactly. When I picked up the truck I could not tell any braking difference at all. While the rotors look nice, and are drilled and slotted, there is no difference in stopping power.

      Awesome Upgrade!

Easy install. Overall time took 4 hours that included changing out both front hubs. The kit came in 2 boxes labelled front and rear. Each rotor is labelled driver and passenger side and each pad is labelled inner and outer. I've always changed my own brakes but this is not a difficult job. The most difficult part was getting the slide clips on the front caliper mounts. By pulling out the tab as you clip it in and push down, the tab will lock into the caliper mount. Aside from a jack, jack stands, and a lug wrench, the only tools needed to do the brakes are a 13mm open ended box wrench for the front caliper, and a 21 mm socket for the caliper mount. Do not use a pneumatic driver. (I bought this truck used and apparently the last brake job that was done, they stripped the caliper bracket bolt, most likely from using air tools. The metal is too soft and the bolts are case hardened. I replaced both brackets and all 4 bolts). Using a breaker bar removes the bolts and installs them easily. The caliper mounts have to come off on the front to remove the rotors. The rear only needs the calipers removed to remove the rotors. Mine were stubbornly rusted to the axle hubs. To easily remove them, there are 2 small threaded holes in the face of the rotors. Screw in 2- 9/16" bolts and they will pop right off as you screw them in against the axle hub face. The kits include all new rubber caps, brake pad slides, and lubricant. My rear calipers are imprinted with the Powerstop logo that you can see when installed, but the fronts did not like the image in the description show. I followed the proper break in procedure, but it does not appear that all of the surface finish has been removed yes. Brand new, they are equal to or better than OEM. I would venture to say that they will get even better as they wear in. They look awesome!!

      Better brakes

I replaced the original brake pads and rotors because they were making noise when I stopped. Bought these which fit perfectly on my 2010 F150. So far the brakes and rotates are quiet and the stop feels better. The products arrived in two boxes and were labeled to make installation easy. I would purchase this set up again. Putting on the product did not take long but getting the old rotate off took some time. I woukd plan at least half a day to get all 4 completed.

      Great Brake Package!

Installed this brake package back in November (now 1/13/18) on my 14 F-150 FX 4 Super Crew ext. wheel base.. Will now stop on a dime with change!! Nice to know I can haul down 6,000 lbs securely. No rust build up either. Truck sat outside for 3 days in the rain and snow and not even a speck of rust appeared. The original rotors would show rust after a light rain. Plus they look real good behind the rims!!!

      Left wondering

First off, shipment arrived promptly... order was correct. (Even though I didn't get the calendar) But this review is about the product(Power Stop Z36 kit. As mentioned everything arrived on time, and was packaged fine. Quick check and everything was included and each item looked/felt as an upgrade should. As far as the install, it was straight forward. My 2011 F-150 had some miles, so biggest challenge was removing one of the rotors. After that everything when on as anyone who has done a brake job would expect. So, after buttoning everything up, I went out on a 40 degree night to break in as per the instructions. Followed them to a tee... never coming to a complete stop, and giving them time time to cool down. It was at this point that things were a big MEH... as some have mentioned, brakes stop the vehicle, everything is smooth, but it just seems to lack any extra grip. Maybe they will last, who knows, but if you're buying these for extra grip of stopping power, if I had it to do over, I would pass. That said, for the price they are okay... but I didn't buy them for okay... stock pads and rotors are much cheaper and okay. For this price I need to feel a difference and this pad and rotor kit does NOT do that at all.

      Nice kit

Kit fit perfectly. All parts were labeled for their respective locations. Stopping power is much better than before. Longevity of these brakes are still unknown as they were just installed today. Will update later on down the road.

      High quality

I have been using the brakes for a couple weeks now and I am highly impressed with them. You can tell a huge difference in performance. I have yet to tow anything heavy but I am looking forward to putting them to work. Only thing I would say about these and is the only reason they get 4 instead of 5 stars is for the install there in a inner and outter pad. They need to be marked more clear which is which. Other than that great product will purchase again!

      Superior Pkg, Performance, Value

Replaced OEM rotors/pads after 50K mi after some warp and scoring (use: commuting and light household hauling). The Z36 kit is premium hardware, nicely packaged w/ clear break-in instructions. Compared to prior fresh OEM rotors/pads when fresh, an immediate improvement in initial bite, w/ impressive stopping power. Have 5K miles w/ the Z36 kit, pad dusting appears equiv to OEM. Appearance, w/ silver zinc coating inhibiting rust on rotor hats is outstanding. Nothing to disappoint: beat the OEM part price as I recall, improved performance, and slotted/drilled zinc coated rotors look absolutely great. Impressed enough to buy 2nd kit for wife's SUV.

      Brakes are awesome!

It took me 1 week to install mine. The reason was someone had token the front pair of rotors with brakes. But even with that problem I called customer service and let me tell you they are the best they mail me the return tag tooknit next day waited 3days for a whole new brakes and rotors front and back. That was my experience overall very good quality on the products. Will definitely recommend for someone who is looking to upgrade.

Highly suggest doing the proper break in process the squeaking went away as soon as I got to a place with enough room to do it. Without hauling there is a noticeable difference haven't towed anything yet but looking forward to it! As I said I highly recommend these to anyone looking to get a meaner look and better stopping power
