Projector vs Reflector F150 Headlight Housings

Reflector housings are the basic style that’s been around since the beginning of headlights. It’s essentially a construction of mirror surfaces, directing the light forward. While this design has seen multiple improvements over the decades, they are far from the best F150 headlights. Projector housings are a refined version of reflector housings. The bonus to projectors is their accuracy and brightness. Like a telescope, projector housings not only have mirror surfaces but additional lenses to provide more focus to the light beam. Projectors also have a cut-off which is why the light pattern has a clean line between visibility and darkness. On top of all of these benefits, the biggest is the ability to use more intense lights like HIDs and LEDs without blinding other drivers.

LED vs HID Headlights

9.9 times out of 10 aftermarket headlights will either be LED or HID. LEDs are more energy efficient than halogens, but they don’t project light as far as HIDs. LEDs also have a hard cut off in their light pattern. Their main benefit, however, is they are much more resistant to vibration. This is why they’re found in light bars and fog light accents. If your F150 is an off-road focused truck, you’ll want to stick to LEDs. HIDs, on the other hand, provide a significant more amount of light. They take a couple of minutes to warm up, but once fully warmed up there’s no mistaking their potency. Depending on the running temperature of the HID, it’ll be a different color. Certain states have outlawed colors like pink and purple, so don’t be getting any bright ideas.
