Jake: Jake here for AmericanTrucks. And today, I'm taking a look at the Rough Country Retractable Bed Cover for 2015 and newer F-150s with the 5.5-foot bed. A retractable bed cover is one of the most convenient ways to protect your bed and make it more functional. This example from Rough Country brings to the table a sleek style, solid aluminum construction, and the most affordable price tag in the segment for a cover that is appealing in a multitude of ways.Adding a bed cover is one of the easiest ways to make the bed of your pickup more functional, and going with a retractable one like this makes things even easier since you don't have to deal with folding or rolling it up yourself like a traditional tonneau cover, makes it much easier and more efficient to load stuff into the bed, and it keeps majority of your bed space functional without impeding rearward visibility. The canister here is a really low-profile unit that barely sticks up above the line of the bed. At first glance, you may not even notice it because you're really only gonna see this much over the top of the bed rail and the entirety of the bed cover retracts into this big old canister, the majority of which, of course, sits below the line of the bed so there's no impact on rearward visibility. Now, opening and closing this cover could not be much simpler either. There's a little squeeze handle right here in the center. You just drop your tailgate, squeeze this. You can let it roll itself open. And when you wanna close it up, just grab the attached strap and you can pull it out until it latches. Getting it fully open and close, too, is also easy on you, thanks to the included tension spring in the canister. So, you don't really need to exert a lot of strength or energy to do it as you can see. This is not attached to anything. I'm just standing behind it and really can do this with one hand. Operation here is smooth and easy, so you can get this open and close in near seconds. Now, the cover is constructed from rigid aluminum slats, and it features weather-resistant vinyl, too. So, it's one of those times where form and function go hand in hand. The black finish here keeps things looking nice and clean on the outside. And that aluminum and vinyl means that this is gonna last a long time in addition to providing a lot of protection for the contents of your bed. So, you get the good looks of a soft cover but the protection of a hardcover, all with the ease of not having to roll or fold anything up.Now, the whole thing is weather-resistant as well, meaning that you solve what is perhaps one of the biggest issues with pickup trucks, and that is the lack of weatherproof storage space outside of the cab. As you can see, we've got some nice weatherstripping here and even on the rails as well. So, it's gonna keep things pretty tight in the back. And since this is such a small unit, you retain nearly full use of the bed itself. So, if you find yourself in need of more space to haul a larger load, super easy to just drop the tailgate, release that handle, and be ready to load up in a matter of seconds. Saves you the hassle of fumbling again with that rolling up or folding tonneau cover. There's no negative impact on rearward visibility. And as long as your tailgate locks, too, you've got what is effectively a fully lockable weather-resistant storage space. Now, this canister can also be removed by itself in a few moments, too. So, if you need the full length of the bed, if you need this extra space, this can be done easily without even having to remove the rails. Now, speaking of those rails, these are also made from the same aluminum as the canister and the slats on the cover itself. So, these are gonna be really strong and durable. They're also powder-coated black to match the canister and blend in easily with your truck and the cover.About the only detractor here with this setup is the price. Now, in comparison to traditional tonneau covers, these retractable ones do just generally cost more. However, this one, in particular, is about as inexpensive as they come for this segment, coming in at about $1,200. And, while, yes, that is still a nice chunk of change, it's about as inexpensive as you can get for a retractable bed cover like this, and you're not skimping on material quality either, plus it's gonna far undercut the cost of a full bed cap. Again, no impact on rearward visibility. So, if you want the additional function and protection without having to make sacrifices, you really can't go wrong here.Installation will come in at a one out of three on our difficulty meter, and should only take you about 30 minutes to get it installed. It's a straightforward installation, though, with no modifications needed to your truck and just a few simple hand tools. So, if you ever wanna remove it, it's easy to do it and it won't damage your bed. Plus you get all of the bracketry that you need right here in the kit. Not much more I can tell you about it here, so why don't we go ahead and hop on over to the install bay and we'll show you the process?Male Speaker: Tools required for this install include a ratchet, a panel remover tool, a Phillips head screwdriver, a pair of scissors, and an 11-millimeter socket. What's going on, guys? Today, we're gonna be installing a bed cover on our F-150, so let's get started. So, our first step's gonna be to lift our canister into place. Now it's labeled which side goes towards the cab, and then we can just drop it onto our rails. So, now with our canister lifted into place, we can install our rails. Now we have a strip of double-sided tape here, so we can peel back a corner and dog-ear it, lay it down, and then we can peel back our backing. So, now with the backing on our double-sided tape peeled back, we can go ahead and slide our rail into place. And then we can install our bolt with our flat washer and locking washer. Now, this one's gonna be a little hard to see on camera, but there's a hole in the bottom of our rail that goes right up into a threaded hole in our canister. And then I'll take an 11-millimeter socket to snug that down. Now we can peel back our double-sided tape backing. And now with that done, we can repeat the same process on the other side. Now we're gonna go ahead and put our weatherstrip across the front side of the bed. Now it's a little longer than you're gonna need, so you can grab yourself pair of scissors so you can cut off the excess. Now we're just gonna peel back on the double-sided tape and start to lay it down. Our next step's gonna be to install our canister cover. Now, this rubber seal is gonna go towards the front of the truck while the brush is gonna be towards the back. And then we can install our two Phillips head screws. And now we can repeat that same process on the other side. Next, we can install our drain tube. So, this top piece is going to screw into the hole in the bottom of our canister, and then we're gonna get a panel remover tool behind this grommet to pop it out, and we'll drain right through there. So, this one's also gonna be a little tough to see on camera. We have a hole right up here that we'll push our drain tube in and twist it into place. And then we can put it through our grommet hole, and we'll repeat that same process on the other side. Now we can install our clamps that hold our rails to the side of our bed. So, this first piece, there's a little cutout groove right in here where you can slide that up into, push it over to the right, and then we'll take the back half and put our screw through. And then we can install this piece. This is gonna go against the bed of the truck to push up or down. Slide that in through the side hole, and then we can twist it into position. Now, on the other side, we're gonna use a flat washer, a locking washer, and a wing nut.So, on the front side, we're gonna be doing the same thing with the exception of our adjustment. So, we'll take our first piece, find our groove. And now we can repeat that same process on the other side. So, now we can go ahead and take the included lubricant, and we're gonna lubricate our seal along our rails on both sides. We're not gonna be doing this for demonstration purposes, but you will at home. And then we can mount our Velcro strip. That'll meet up with the Velcro on the end of our strap. That way we can tie it away on the side so that's easily accessible. So, that'll wrap up this review and install of the Rough Country Retractable Bed Cover for your 2015 to current F-150 with the 5.5-foot bed.
