On top of that cotton there are stiff aluminum grates at either end. These mesh screens give the filter structure and add another layer of filtering as well. The whole thing is washable and you can reuse that same filter as many times as you like.

The whole body, the heat shield and little bits of the filter are made from rugged polyethylene plastic. It's black, thick and sturdy. The hardware, including all the clamps, are made out of stainless steel. The filter itself is cotton and aluminum.
