Hey, guys, Adam here with americantrucks.com and today we're taking a closer look at, installing and dyno testing the SCT BDX Tuner available for the '11 to '14 5 liter F150. Now, we've got our '13 5.0 strapped down to the dyno and before we jump into the details of the BDX what do you say we had right on over to the dyno graph and take a look at some results? So, we strapped down our '13 F150 to the dyno, we have 35-inch tires on it along with 93 octane in the tank bone stock otherwise. We established our baseline run and walk away with 274 horsepower, 295 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels. We then uploaded our 93 performance preloaded tune on our BDX device, altered it for 93 octane and changed our tire size. Ran it again under the same conditions and walk away with 281 horsepower, 308 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels, good for peak gains of 7 horsepower and 13 torque at the rear. Those numbers alone might not sound like a ton but it is worth noting that it is a preloaded tune on bigger wheels and tires. It even gets better though under the curve. We're seeing curve gains of up to 21 horsepower and 20 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels, which is actually pretty impressive for a simple preloaded tune. Once you start getting into custom tune territory or even adding aftermarket bolt-ons like a cold-air intake, for example, you can start getting better results out of that as well. Now, seeing 20 torque gains over factory at the low RPM range is what we're seeing, low to mid-range around 4,000 RPM, that right there guys is definitely gonna make a difference out on the road. Those curve gains are gonna make this truck wake up so much more and be a lot more enjoyable. Now, the BDX tuner here is going to be for the 5.0 owner looking for a preloaded or canned tuner that has the capability of holding custom tunes, but more importantly, someone looking to improve horsepower and torque, throttle response and acceleration and of course account for some larger wheels and tires. Now, with this particular device here we altered our 93 octane preloaded tune right on the device to account for the bigger 35 inches and to account for 93 octane in the tank. Now, that's gonna help maximize your vehicle's performance, your vehicle's power, it's gonna reduce that drive by wire delay, which is essentially the delay in time between hitting the gas and your truck getting off the line. So, it can make your truck feel a lot more alive. Anytime you add larger wheels and tires to your truck it can start to feel a little bit more sluggish, and altering that in a simple preloaded tune with a device like this can go a long way. And as you just saw from our dyno graph, it does make a pretty big difference. The peak gains themselves are pretty impressive, but looking at the curve gains it gets even better. Now, looking at this device and all of its features, you can, of course, hold up to 10 custom tunes on the BDX. So, if you wanted to take some time and locate a custom tuner of your choice, you can eventually add custom tunes to the BDX.You can also data log right on the device. So, even if you're using a custom tune or preloaded, you can monitor and record your vehicle's performance to then make possible revisions to either the preloaded or aftermarket custom tune. You can also take advantage of the gauges and data log screen. You can monitor live engine vitals on the fly within arm's reach of diversity. Things like intake air temp, coolant temperature, battery voltage, you can monitor air-fuel ratio and a number of other parameters. As a matter of fact, you can track up to eight at one time. And that's on the same screen that you actually record the data logs with, so they go hand in hand. You can also take advantage of the DTC code reader. So, anytime the check engine light comes on, plug this guy in, read the code, get a description and you can clear it right then and there. You also have cloud capabilities right on the device, which essentially means you can wirelessly send and receive tune files and data log files. You can even send your stock file to the cloud to hold on to. You have WiFi access, wireless updating for software and firmware, and a number of other features I'll walk you through in just a second. Know that the device comes in right around 400 bucks and it's gonna get one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. Anybody can tackle this in the driveway at home with about 30 minutes from start to finish. I'm gonna show you every step of the process including how to tune your truck, then I'll show you the features, let's get to it.First step, grab your BDX device and the OBD to harness, plug the fatter side into the OBD2 port located under the driver side dash, right about the middle there. Once that's plugged in, the other end is going to go right into the top of your BDX device. Now we can hop in and get to work. All right, first up here, of course, is put your key in the ignition, turn it into the on position but don't actually start your engine, we're gonna go right into tuning the vehicle. So, program vehicle from the main menu, confirm your VIN. It may require WiFi right off the bat. So, you wanna be in range of a WiFi network, especially if this is the first time out of the box with this device. All right. So, you may have update files for your device again especially if it is brand new. So, you wanna make sure you're not unplugging the device, let it do its thing while it's connected to WiFi downloading those update files. Normally there's somewhere between 5 to 10, ours looks like it has about 11 so we're gonna let it do its thing. Again, just don't disconnect your device and don't turn your key off. All right. So, you hit okay once it's up to date. Sometimes after the software update there will be firmware updates and typically there's only two of them, so they move pretty quickly as well. And then once it's done, it'll reboot the device and get you back to where you need to be. All right. So, we're gonna hit okay on that update complete. Now, at this point, you can sync from the cloud, if you have any tunes on the cloud. We're going right with the preloaded option. So, we're gonna hit skip, continue on your street notice and make sure your key is in the on position but don't start the engine and press continue.Since this device does hold custom tunes, if you have them available, you can upload your tunes and find them here. We again wanna focus on the preloaded, which is that 5.0 F150 option, so I'm gonna go ahead and select that. All right. So, we wanted to pair our device by hitting confirm, and there's also additional tuned options that you can change. So, I'll select that and show you guys what that looks like. First thing you wanna change right off the bat is the octane. We wanna go from factory 87 to 93 because that's what we have in the tank, you can change if you have an aftermarket airbox or cold air intake. There's a number of other options here for shift press, axle ratio, tire revs per mile, so many options to change here. If you have larger wheels and tires, you can change them here. We have 35s so I'm gonna scroll down here to about 35.1, approximately what we have, so I'm gonna select that and I'm gonna hit approve. Hit continue. It will compile those options that you've changed and start tuning. So it says turn key off, so we wanna do that and then back on. Again, at no point starting the engine. From here it'll unlock the processor, save your factory tune to the device in case you ever wanna go back to stock and then it'll jump into flashing that preloaded tune that we selected. All right, at this point you can see the stockpile has been saved to the device, it's now writing the tune that we slightly altered in those parameters here but it'll load zero to 100. Again, make sure that you don't unplug the device or turn the key off, let it do its thing and then we'll come back at the very end. All right. So, it's telling us to turn the key off and back on and programming complete. We can hit Done, goes right back to the main menu and you're good to go.All right. Now, I wanna take you through some of the other options and features of the BDX device. Aside from program vehicle, we saw the preloaded tune, we saw how to alter some of the parameters, you can also store custom tunes if you'd like there, all that's through program vehicle. But under that, there's a couple more to take advantage of.Gauges and data log is super useful for guys who wanna track and monitor live engine vitals on the fly. So, if you hit continue with the key in the on position, you'll be able to monitor some of those parameters and edit them to your liking. Now, we're in a '13 5.0, so you wanna find the parameter or the configuration that fits with that vehicle. So, Ford gas '08 and newer fits that, so we're gonna hit continue on that configuration. Now, right off the bat, the default is to have two different gauges, you have a control module voltage and a coolant temp. Now, those alone are nice to know but if you wanted to modify them, you can go straight over to one of them. So, say you wanna change control module voltage, select it, select item, and then you have a list of things to change to. The coolant temp, intake air temp, you have load value as fraction, you have a couple of really technical options. You have fuel trim, air-fuel ratio, there's number of those, RPMs, pedal position voltage. We're gonna go ahead and select intake air temp, and select approve, just to give you an example here. So, now we have intake air temp and coolant temp. Now, if you go to the right, and you go down to select gauge layout, you can change that layout anywhere from two to eight at once. Now, of course, you have portrait and landscape mode as well. So, you can change that up as you please. So, here's eight at once, it's a little bit smaller in each of the gauges to fit a little bit more on the screen. But again, you can go through and modify and change any of these that you wanna modify. If you go to the right again, you can record a data log. So, what you see on the screen there with that configuration, you can then record the vehicle's performance. And it's really useful for guys using custom tunes, you can record it and communicate it back to your custom tuner and make possible revisions and see if you need any revisions with the tuner. So, that option is there. Then finally you can select stop data log and it takes you back to the main menu.Vehicle functions. So, if the check engine light comes on, you have the read DTC codes or diagnostic trouble code reader. If you get the code, read the code, get a description and you can clear it right then in there as well. Now, special functions most guys won't need to touch, things like cam relearn are located in that menu, but the option is there if you need it. Vehicle info will give you your VIN number, your ECU strategy code, you have a number of other vehicle parameters there. Device info will give you things like the device serial number, you get the firmware and software versions, you also see your married status so you can see that this device is married with your vehicle, how many flashes and unlocks you have left. You'll also be able to locate battery voltage and device info. On device settings, you have check for updates, cloud file sync, and WiFi. Now, those three are really important. You can connect wirelessly to a WiFi network, you can sync custom tune files and data log files to and from the cloud wirelessly without needing a laptop or computer. Check for Updates again works with WiFi hand in hand, you can connect to the wireless network. Check for software and firmware updates from SCT which can frequently come out. You can upload your data log to the cloud or your stock file to the cloud. You have a couple of basic device settings, you can change the theme, the color, brightness, day and night, orientation, audio, there's a little beep with each button press. Startup functions, the last thing I wanna mention, if you find yourself frequently using the gauges and data log screen more often than not, or if you're mounting this on a windshield mount, you can make it so that it starts right up and go straight to the gauges and data lock screen. So, that I think is very useful for guys who are using that every day. You can hit Exit and take you right back to the main menu and that's your BDX.That's gonna wrap up my review, install and dyno test for the SCT BDX Tuner for the '11 to '14 5.0 F150. And get yours right here at americantrucks.com.
