If you're looking for a flush-fitting high-quality, hard folding tonneau cover for your 2017 and newer Super Duty, the BAKFlip MX4 that we have here today from BAK Industries will definitely be one of my top picks on the site. Now, the BAKFlip will be a folding option that's gonna be offered for both the six and three quarter or eight-foot beds. And will start right around 1000 bucks for the smaller bed size and creep up just a little bit from there for the longer bed option. Now, the install's gonna be extremely straightforward here, guys. So we're gonna call this a solid one out of three wrenches on the old difficulty meter and I would say at least 30 minutes to get everything in place. But if you hang with me for a bit, I'll walk you through that job later in the video. So, if you're looking for the ultimate in protection from both the elements and also thieves, well, then the hard cover that we have here today is certainly gonna be one of the better ways to go.Now, unlike those soft vinyl covers in the category, the BAKFlip here can't easily be defeated with a knife, thus exposing all of your goodies, which really is the unfortunate reality of most of your affordable soft covers. Now, with the BAKFlip in place and that tailgate locked up, there really is no easy way to penetrate the bed. In fact, full disclosure, I've had this exact cover on my truck for the last seven-plus years, and really had no issues whatsoever with the cover in place. But let's talk more about the cover itself and that extra security, at least in this case is gonna come from the durable aircraft-grade aluminum shell, which is around the high-density foam core. Now, the aluminum is given a little bit of texture here, and those panels are finished off in what I would say is kind of a satin black powder coat that you're not gonna have to worry about fading or chipping on you over the years. Now, for whatever reason you do encounter any issues, BAK Industries is gonna cover this MX4 with a limited three-year warranty. So, always nice to point that out. Now, as far as your design is concerned well, as the name implies, the BAKFlip is going to be a flipping or folding cover. And in my opinion, that's gonna be one of the more popular designs you'll encounter here in the category. Now, there certainly will be rolling options such as a revolver also from BAK Industries. And there will also be retractable hard covers as well. But I feel like the folding options are certainly gonna be the most popular of the bunch. Now, I feel the folding option is great because it does give you the option to flip a couple of sections up at a time if you need to expose a little bit of the bed or you can flip the entire cover up and out of the way if you do need to access the entire bed in a moment's notice. Now, that could be helpful obviously, if you're hauling something large or if you do some fifth-wheel or gooseneck towing, this is obviously benefit as well. Now, the only drawback to this versus say, a rolling cover is that yes, you do lose the visibility out of the rear window when the cover is fully folded up. But again, as someone who has had this cover in place, it really is a non-issue, especially in the modern times of rearview cameras. Now let's give you a brief walkthrough of how to operate it. First things first, obviously drop your tailgate. There'll be this little cable here towards the end. You just simply pull down on that, which will release your latches and allow you to fold the cover up. There will be another cable at this portion. And then finally, one more here if you wanna gain access to your entire bed. At this point, the cover will rest against your back window. And if you wanna travel like this, what you need to do is use your included legs here, get them situated in the brackets, and tighten them down.Repeat that process on the other side, and that will lock your cover in place up and out of the way. To close your cover, simply unscrew your clip here, slide the bracket out of the way, secure your leg. And at this point, we're just dropping it down one section at a time. The nice thing about the BAKFlip is that you can close all of your sections before closing your tailgate, which is something that's not always possible with other hard fold covers in the market. Now, if you don't need access of the entire bed but maybe three-fourths of it, what you could do, alternatively, is secure your little kickstand here, drop it down, and then secure the majority of your tonneau cover or your BAKFlip here with the nylon straps. Now, one thing I do really enjoy about this cover in particular, is the flush design of how it sits once installed. Meaning it's going to sit flush with the bed rails, just make for a very clean look overall. Now, the cover is going to mount to your bed rails, thanks to the included clamps. And that's gonna make for a very painless install as you guys are about to see in a minute. Now, the cover is also going to incorporate thick rubber seals on all four sides here, including at the tailgate to help block out any rain or moisture, thus keeping your stuff nice and dry in the process. But now we wanna shift gears and talk a little bit more about that install as promised earlier.Again, guys, a very simple job, bolt-on affair here using some pretty basic hand tools. So, without further ado, check out our detailed walkthrough and tool breakdown right now. Tools used for this job include a 3/8 ratchet or cordless gun, 14-millimeter socket, and a Phillips head screwdriver. All right, guys, getting started here with our BAKFlip MX4 install with our Super Duty. First step, is gonna be getting rails in place. They do include the clamps needed for this, three per side.We have a 14-millimeter socket along with our impact gun set to the lowest torque setting because these bolts are only 10 foot-pounds a piece. First things first, we're gonna get this bed rail in place. Start with our first clamp, which should be set back roughly 6 to 9 inches from the front of the bed. So let's go. We've got a rail going up. Guys, very important that this is situated closest to the bulkhead upfront here. And then again, about 6 to 9 inches back for our first clamp is where you wanna be.All right. So we're gonna go ahead and start our clamp. We wanna make sure we get it all the way up there so it's grabbing onto our bed rails. We also wanna make sure that the rail itself is sitting nice and flush against the side of the bed. Once you have it where you like it, go ahead and grab your 14-mill, tighten up your clamp. And that should hold it in place. Next clamp will be situated kind of right in the middle. You wanna make sure you pick a location that where your bed liner or bed won't interfere with the clamp itself.Looks like a good spot for us right here. Make sure that's nice and flush there that bed rail, hold it in place, and tighten your clamp. And our final clamp here on the passenger side, we wanna get this about 6 inches from the rear. And again, very important to make sure you're holding the rail flush to your bed rail there. You don't want that sticking up on you. Once you got it where you want it, tighten it up. And we're gonna now repeat that process on the driver side. Now, with both of our bed rails in place, we have to do our next little step, which is get our buckle receivers in place before we actually put the cover up. We wanna make sure that these are facing the correct direction, basically towards your buckle, and make sure they're not 180 out. So we have some machine screws here. It's very important we don't use any power tools on this step. We don't wanna strip these out and we're gonna use these little guys here, these sleeves to go through and then capture the screw on the top side. All right. Repeat that process on the other side. Now we're gonna actually lift the cover up onto the rails. Might be a little easier if you have a second set of hands around to help you get it in place. But the idea is we'll just get it at up there and then we'll line everything up. With our MX4 up onto the bed rails, guys, now, what we really wanna do is make sure that we're nice and even across the bulkhead here nearest the cab, we don't want it cocked any certain way. When you're happy with how it's sitting, we can go ahead and grab our bolts that secure to our brackets underneath and slide them on through. All right. With everything lined up, we can install our bolt, make sure we have a rubber gasket here on the bolt head side, and slide it through your bracket. Repeat that process on the other side. We're gonna go ahead and install the hardware on the underside of the bolts we just installed. Now, we do have another rubber washer we're gonna put on first followed by the metal washer, lock washer, and then finally our knob here. So we're gonna get those in place now. Now, these knobs, you just want to leave them loose for now. There might be some adjustment needed here with the cover towards the end of our install. I'll just get them started and then we'll tighten up later on. Same idea here, rubber washer, metal washer, lock washer, and your knob. So at this point, our cover is essentially installed but we're not quite done yet. What we need to do next is fold the cover down and check our distance to our tailgate. Now, BAK Industries tells us we're looking at about a quarter of an inch, ideally, of overlap from the tonneau cover over the tailgate. So we're gonna see if we're close to that now, and if not, make some adjustments. And hear it locking in place, that's a good sign, means we're all lined up. All right. So this is perfect, right. Now we can see here, we have a nice little gap. That's not a big deal because, at this point, the cover's adjusted all the way towards the front of the truck. So this next step is easy. That's why we left those knobs loose. At this point, we're gonna fold it back up, slide the cover down I would say maybe a 1/2-inch in those brackets, tighten them back up, and see if that's the ticket. Make sure knobs are still loose. All right, guys, again, so I think we're gonna just slide it back about a 1/2-inch. That's really all we're looking for here. So just make sure you're keeping an eye on it, doing it equal on both sides. And when you think you got it we'll go ahead and repeat that step. With our adjustment made, now we're gonna go ahead and test-fit it once again. Again, we're looking for that small bit of overlap from the cover itself over the tailgate. So let's give it a shot. All right. Well, I'm really happy with how this is sitting. This is absolutely perfect. Next step is tighten up those clamps upfront. Make sure this doesn't slide around on us. And then we have some small little things we need to do to finalize our installation. So like I just said, guys, we're just about pretty much wrapped up but there are some smaller steps needed. We are gonna tighten down those clamps. But before we do, we have these rubber bumpers that are included with the kit. These are designed to go in place of your final panel here. And the idea being, once you lift this up to rest it on the cab, whether you need to put your legs up or you just need to rest the cover up there, it's not going to obviously break or damage your window or scratch your cab. So we wanna make sure we get these on this panel here. We got three of them to install now held on by 3M tape. Let's just get them in place. Now, the instructions state, you wanna start at least 10-inch and over from the very edge here for our outer portion. That's what we're gonna do first.Right in the middle here for our next one. And last but not least, again, our outer piece. Those in place, now we can raise the cover up, tighten our clamps, and install our drains. All right. With our cover up and out of the way, now we're gonna give our knob the final tighten up here to lock our cover in position. And repeat that on both sides. All right. With our clamps all tightened up, now we're going to install our drains. BAK tells us in the instructions that if you have a plastic drop-in liner like we do here in our truck, basically what you're gonna wanna do is fish the drain down behind this panel like so.Now, you know, if you're not crazy about leaving water underneath the plastic bed liner between your metal bed, that's definitely on you. You can certainly figure out another solution or just forego the drains altogether. But the idea is we wanna keep the water away from the bed and all of your cargo and keep things dry and running your drain down, underneath the bed liner will do that. So we're gonna do that next. I'm just gonna repeat that process here on the other side.Guys, again, I'm just gonna go ahead and snap this in the position, drain, run it down underneath our cover. Now, if you wanted, you could always drill a hole in this to make it a little bit cleaner but for now, just get the basic point. And with all our steps completed, that's gonna wrap up our installation of the BAKFlip MX4 from BAK Industries, available for your 2017 and your Super Duty at home.
