Ford F-150 Exterior Storage: Essential Guide

Ford F-150 Exterior Storage: Essential Guide

There are nearly endless options to customize your Ford F-150, from bed rails to running boards and sidesteps. Aside from sheer aesthetics, F-150 owners also know that aftermarket accessories serve practical applications to make towing, hauling, and driving easier and more efficient. One way to truly maximize your F-150’s utility is by purchasing some additional exterior storage equipment. From mounted toolboxes to cargo carriers, maximizing the space in your F-150 truck bed may seem pointless when you look at its sheer size, but you soon realize it’s completely necessary.

F-150 Truck Bed Payload Capacity and Size

Most standard F-150 bed sizes lie at about 6’6”, while some regular cab models have been found to have bed lengths up to 8’, which is considered a long cargo box. While the 2015 F150 contains an impressive 3,330 lbs. bed payload capacity, it’s generally not recommended you carry over 1,250 lbs. in your cargo bed for all models.

With impressive space and available mounting options for your bed cargo, the  F-150 provides you with the space and power necessary to haul heavy equipment from job to job.

Making the Most out of your F-150 Bed Space

Newer model F-150s feature the amazing boxlink cargo management system with lockable tie-down cleats made of die-cast zinc. The boxlink system allows you to store ramps and attach carabiners and bungee cords to secure loose equipment, providing you with peace of mind and more cargo space.

A cargo gate extender can extend your F-150s bed length to haul longer equipment without fear of it falling out of your tailgate. With nylon uprights, you can simply tie your bed extender to the side of your tailgate. Bed extenders are also compatible with spray on bed liners and will not scratch the surface of your F-150 cargo bed.

There are multiple aftermarket options to haul outdoor equipment, from bike racks that safely attach to bed rails -- or the boxlink system -- to roof racks for kayaks and additional equipment. Roof racks are compatible with your F-150s roof tracks. Simply mount the two crossbars to the existing roof tracks. For extra security you can purchase nylon straps or bungee cords to secure roof cargo.

F-150 Truck Bed Tool Box Options

Consider purchasing a swing case or mounted toolbox for your F-150 so you don't have tools spread out across your bed. Managing your tools and equipment can allow you to evenly distribute weight across your F-150 to gain better fuel economy and acquire sharper turns.

Other benefits include:

  • Decreased rattle from tools
  • Protection from the elements
  • Locks deter and stop thieves from stealing valuable power tools
  • Convenient storage and organization

Swing cases conveniently fit on the driver side of your tonneau bed over the wheel well. A mounted tool box is available for any generation F-150 and can be mounted at the front of your tonneau bed without obstructing your rear view. With all season weather protection, storage options will shield your tools against the elements and promise long life protection.

Installing truck box may require professional assistance. You’ll need to measure the width of your truck box and cut out rubber padding to place over your truck rails to prevent them from scratching. You’ll need to drill some holes in the bed of your truck and on the sides to place j-bolt plugs through to secure your truck box.

Securing F-150 Cargo

Newer F-150 models feature the convenient boxlink cargo management system which provides mounted cleats where ropes and bungee cords can be secured. Attachable cleats also feature locking mechanisms to prevent thieves from stealing precious equipment from your tonneau bed.

Most cargo management systems feature cleats that slide along the length of the bed to secure cargo of any size. Insert a cargo gate or cargo net to safely secure equipment from rattling or becoming dislodged during transport.

For older models, F-150 owners can choose from s-shaped cargo buckles with lockable mounts that safely secure cargo. Crossbar tie-downs secure cargo racks and track knobs serve as a locking, anti-theft system to secure cargo in your rack system. These simple aftermarket modifications will allow you to produce your own affordable cargo management system to safely secure valuable equipment. There are mounting kits available that hook directly onto cargo racks for the same purpose.
