      Video Review & Installation

Hey, guys, so today we're checking out the Dee Zee Tailgate Assist, fitting all 2015 and newer F-150s. So if you are looking for some small affordable, easy to install, and very functional mods for your F-150, then this is going to be a great choice to take a look into. Now, this is gonna be great for any F-150 owner who is not a fan of the weight of the tailgate and is looking for a little bit of help whenever they're opening up the tailgate or accessing their bed area. Essentially, what this is going to do is help you control the drop rate very safely and essentially assist you whenever you're opening up your tailgate as it says in the name. Now, this kit is going to consist of the gas-powered strut in the middle that is going to help you when it comes to alleviating that extra weight when dropping the tailgate into brackets that are going to mount up to factory mounting points, so you don't have to do any additional drilling. Now I do like the fact that they're both made of aluminum and a steel construction, so they will hold up for a very long time and they're also going to be pretty heavy-duty as far as the gas-powered strut is concerned since you only need one for the tailgate. You don't need one for either side like you would with a hood strut. This is going to bear all of the weight of the tailgate and, again, help you safely drop the tailgate, especially in heavy situations with that heavy tailgate there. Now, when it comes to prices, it's going to be a very affordable mod when it comes to the function of the actual mod itself, coming in at roughly $50. Now, in my personal opinion, for $50 and the function that you're getting, that is definitely worth that price point. And there are other options available on the page for '15 and newer F-150s. However, they may be set up a little bit differently. So, instead of the additional hardware that's included in this kit, you may be reusing the factory hardware or all of the factory hardware. The brackets may be set up a little bit differently or the strut is going to be flipped. Now it kind of comes down to your personal preference in design. However, I personally like the fact that it comes with some new hardware and this is going to have a pretty heavy duty bracket in comparison to some other options, which are a little bit smaller. So, overall, this is a very solid kit, definitely worth that $50, and is really going to help you when it comes to opening up that heavy tailgate. Now as far as install is concerned, I'm gonna give this a very easy one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. You're probably gonna need about 30 minutes worth of your time to get the job done in the driveway with some very basic hand tools. So speaking of the install, let's jump into that now.The tools that I used for my install were a ratchet, we provided a T50 Torx key, a T50 Torx socket, a 5-millimeter Allen socket, and a 10-millimeter deep socket. So to start off this install, we're gonna start with our tailgate open and then we're going to remove a couple of bolts here on the side in order to mount up our bracket. So for that first step, you're gonna need a 10-millimeter socket or a 10-millimeter wrench. So on the backside of the tailgate on the driver side, we're gonna have two bolts here. We're gonna remove the top one completely and then we're gonna loosen up the bottom one in order to mount up our bracket. I'm gonna be using a 10-millimeter socket. Again, you can use a 10-millimeter wrench if that's a little bit easier for you or better to access. Now, again, we're only gonna be loosening this one up so we can get the bracket behind it.Next, we can grab our bracket, making sure that the hook part is down at the bottom. This is what we're gonna hook behind this bolt here. And then we're gonna take our provided Allen head bolt in the kit. We're gonna take a 5-millimeter Allen socket. You could also just use a regular Allen key and we're gonna spread that into place. What we can do at this point is tighten up this lower bolt with that 10-millimeter socket, making sure that we're holding the bracket straight. Then we can switch to our 5-millimeter Allen socket. Again, you can use an Allen key. An Allen socket might be a little bit better just because this has a little bit of thread locker on it, to begin with. So it is going to be hard to turn if you don't have a little bit of leverage on it. Once that's tight, you can move to the top. So if you follow the support cable for your tailgate all the way up, you're gonna see where it's mounted here. We are going to remove this bolt and sandwich our bracket in between so we can melt up our shock here. So, you are provided with a T50 Torx key out of the kit. I'm gonna use a T50 Torx socket to make it a little bit easier. If you put a little bit of support on the tailgate, you can get that out a little bit easier. But at this point, what we're going to do is sandwich that bracket right in between and we can get that re-lined up. I'm actually going to use the provided key to help get that threaded by hand, and then we can go ahead and tighten that up with the T50 Torx or the socket should I say. Next, we can take our little shock absorber here and we can pop this onto the brackets. This is just going to have a little ball and socket-style attachment to it. So, all we have to do is just pop this onto the bracket, give it a good push, and it should clip into place. Now I would like to mention that the larger part or the thicker part of the shock here is gonna go towards the top. And then once you pull the shock out a little bit for the rod out of the shock, that skinnier part is gonna go towards the bottom. That's just gonna help you out with clearance as well. We'll have to give it a good push and it should clip right into place. You're gonna have to pull the rod out of the shock a little bit in order to reach that top mount, then it should clip into place and you have your Tailgate Assist. So now that your Tailgate Assist is installed, you're not really gonna have to bear all the weight of your tailgate when putting it down. So, once you have it installed, we can just open it up. And as you can see, that shock is going to help you when it comes to that heavy tailgate and putting it down. And then once you're finished with it, it's going to be just as easy as it was without the Assist to pop it back up in place. So that is going to wrap it up for my review and install. Description

Improved Truck Bed Operation. The tailgate of your Ford F-150 is built strong and rigid, as it keeps your cargo in place no matter how fast you go. As a result, the tailgate can be quite heavy; opening and closing it can be a chore with the gate scarily dropping down hard if you don't catch it. This is why you should get the Tailgate Assist, which can safely control the drop rate of the tailgate. It’s so reliable that anyone can open and close the tailgate with ease, without any risk of sudden drops that cause irreparable damage.

High-Quality Construction. The Tailgate Assist is designed to handle your heavy tailgate, so you can expect that it is made from high-quality materials and superior construction. The single dampened gas strut is enough to carry the weight, so you only need 1 tailgate assist per vehicle. It has a black finish, so it matches the tailgate’s factory cables.

No-Drill Installation. Installing the Tailgate Assist is quite easy because you don’t have to drill extra holes in your truck bed or bodywork to make it fit. It uses factory mounting points and has all the installation hardware included. It mounts to the driver’s side, and with only 1 tailgate assist necessary per vehicle, it won’t take you more than 30 minutes to complete the project.

Three-Year Warranty. The Tailgate Assist is guaranteed free from defects in materials, workmanship, and design under normal use for a period of three years. However, this warranty applies only to the original purchaser of the product, and modification of any kind voids all warranty coverage.

Application. The Tailgate Assist fits all 2015-2024 Ford F-150 models.
