Jake: Jake here for American Trucks, and in this video, we're taking a look at the Bilstein B8 5100 Series Rear Shock for two- to four-inch lifts fitting 1999 to 2018 Silverado and Sierra 1500s. Upgrading your shocks is an excellent way to improve both the ride and handling characteristics of your truck, and the B8 5100s from Bilstein can make a huge difference in how it performs, whether you're rocking a two-inch lift, a four-inch lift, or anything in between, and it does it all for an affordable price.I do not like to mince words when it comes to suspension modifications. When it comes to getting some kind of lift or level on your truck, yes, we all want the look, but it should ride and perform well too. And nobody does ride and handling better than Bilstein. I've had Bilsteins on several of my own vehicles, including a set of these B8 5100s, and I can tell you that they never fail to impress. Now, this shock is set up for a lifted truck, anywhere from two inches up to four inches. And if you're going to have a variance like that, you've got to have the damping to match. Otherwise, the ride is going to be compromised and it may not handle well or be safe. But of course, Bilstein has got you covered here. The B8 5100 features digressive valving technology inside, which allows the shock to instantly react to impacts and varying road surfaces. There are velocity-sensitive, digressive floating pistons inside and they allow for more variability in rebound compression and travel than a traditional shock. And that just adds up to more control on the street or trail. Despite being a non-adjustable monotube shock without remote reservoirs, the damping here is excellent and you can definitely feel the difference in body control versus stock. It's not going to ruin the ride quality by any means. In fact, it stays pretty much the same, just a bit more firm, and again, more controlled. It's a shock that doesn't really compromise in any way.Construction, as is typical with Bilstein's offerings, is excellent as well. You get a 46-millimeter diameter shock body that is zinc plated for durability and good looks. Now, inside are chromed and hardened piston rods with that velocity-sensitive digressive floating piston we were talking about earlier. You also get new OEM-grade bushings at either end on the mounting points, giving you everything you need to replace your shock. Now, Bilstein also backs these up with a lifetime warranty against defects, and I can tell you from experience, they are good about honoring that. Just make sure you save your receipt.Pricing will come in at about $150. And as you've noticed by now, I've only got one shock up here on the table, and that is because these are sold separately. So make sure you select two for your quantity when you go to buy them since you do want to get these in pairs. Now, that $150 price point does put these about in the middle of the range price-wise. And in my book, that seems to be about right. Since you aren't getting things like adjustable damping or remote reservoir, you do save a bit on cost. But these are still going to provide excellent damping control and the ability to get your truck right with that lift on it too. So, if you're shopping for shocks that are really going to complement your lift kit, you really can't go wrong with a set of these. Now, it's worth mentioning that there is a matching front shock of this same series available. So if you're doing them, I would highly recommend doing both front and rear together. It's going to make a big improvement in how your truck drives, and it's always good when you do shocks to have a nice clean match set.Installation will get a one out of three on our difficulty meter, and this should take you about one hour per shock. Now, since the rear of these trucks is a leaf spring, you just have to unbolt your stock shock absorber, bolt this guy in its place, and then repeat it on the other side with that second one that you've also added to your cart. Now, aside from taking the wheel off and jacking the truck up, this is really a two-bolt job. It's pretty straightforward and definitely something you can accomplish at home. And to show you that process now, let's hand things over to one of our AT customers.Man: So today we're going to be replacing the rear shocks on my 2009 Silverado. You can see the tools that I'm using today. There is an adjustable wrench. There's a pair of wire snips to cut the straps off of the tubes to let them extend out. There is an extendable ratchet and a 13/16 socket. All I'm doing here is just letting the shocks extend out a little bit. They're going to come to you shipped, strapped up, compressed down. So that's all I'm doing is just allowing them to extend out a little bit.Now that I'm under the truck, you take your adjustable wrench on the bottom of your shock. You're going to have a nut, and on the other side, you're going to have the bolt. You just take that out with a drill. I used a drill. It wasn't in the original picture but I used a drill just for the speed of the process. And then on the top of the shock, there is another bolt. Take that one out, and you'll start seeing the shock get loose. And eventually, you'll see how it gets loose, and eventually, you can just pull the bolt out. On the top bolt, there is no nut. It's a self-threaded hole on the other side of the mounting. But you just take that off, pull the bolt right on out, and the shock will come right out. I did use a drill again. Once again, this is just for the speed of the process. It's kinda hard to get up in there. You're underneath the bed of the truck. I do have a three-inch lift. These shocks that I'm installing are for zero- to three-inch lifts. They are built in. And the ones that I'm taking out are Rough Countries. So, I've heard a lot of good things about the Bilsteins. I'm just going to put in the Bilsteins right here. This is the top bolt. Just reattach the top bolt. Everything that you take out, you put right back in. Super simple. Throw it in there, grill it in. Once again, there's no nut for the top. For the bottom, this is where it gets a little bit tricky. You do have to compress the shock up so that you can get the bottom bolt in. But once you get it in, you can throw the nut back on and tighten it up with the drill or a ratchet, 13/16 socket. Just hold your adjustable wrench, hit it with the drill, and it'll get right back in there. Took a minute for me to get the attachments on there, trying to work under the truck and trying to explain things to my videographer. But once I got things on there, I was able to really tighten it down with that extendable ratchet and that 13/16, get it nice and secure so that I don't have to worry about it down the road. One last tug, get it nice and tight. There we go. That's the first one. Now, same thing on the second side. Take out the bottom bolt. I've got the ratchet on the bolt and I've got the adjustable wrench on the nut, and I'm just plying it out, taking it out enough so that I can use my drill. Once I get the drill on there, nice and easy, comes right on out. And then I just left the old shock just hang there until take the top one out. This one's a little bit trickier. This is the passenger side, so it extends forward. The shock extends forward, so it's a little bit more difficult to get to, a little bit more difficult to video. But I was able to get it out. I will say 15 minutes, 15 to 20 minutes before I started everything, I did hit the nuts and bolts with some PB Blaster. I typically do that with all my jobs just to make sure that it's not tougher than it needs to be.These shocks have only been in there for a year, but I'm ready to change them out, change them to the bigger and better. Got the bolt out, still trying to get the top one out. Got the top bolt out. Now it's time to do the same thing to the bottom as I did the other one. Get it up, get the bolt in, get the nut fastened. Used my drill to get it in as much as I can, as much as the drill will take it in. And then after that, hit it with the ratchet, adjustable wrench and ratchet, just to tighten it down a little bit more, secure it a little bit more. Here comes the ratchet, 13/16 socket, adjustable wrench on one side, socket on the other. And tighten it down. Super simple process. You will see that I have the jack stand up there. It wasn't really completely necessary, but I just always put a jack stand up anytime I'm working under the car. Yeah, tighten it down, get a few more tightens on it, nice and tight. And that's it, job is done.Jake: That's going to do it for our review and install of the Bilstein B8 5100 Series Rear Shock for two- to four-inch lifts, fitting 1999 to 2018 Silverado and Sierra 1500s. Thanks so much for watching, and as always, for all things Silverado and Sierra, be sure to keep it right here at americantrucks.com.
