      What's going on, ladies and gentlemen? Travis from americantrucks.com, and today I'm showing you guys a particularly interesting cold air intake designed for the '15 and '16 3.5-liter EcoBoost powered F-150. This is the aFe Magnum FORCE Stage 2 Cold Air Intake featuring their Pro Dry S Filter. Now, this is a really cool intake because it's pretty affordable at around $300. Kind of falls in the middle of the pack, but aFe actually took the time to design the filter on this kit to ensure that you can reliably take your truck off-road, and the filter in this kit is gonna do an excellent job of providing maximum airflow to the turbos while at the same time providing the most protection for your motor from contaminants in the atmosphere. The Pro Dry S Filter is a 3-layer construction made out of synthetic material, and it promises an 84% improvement in airflow over the factory setup.That's pretty cool because the EcoBoost motor, in particular, also does a pretty cool thing. It can actually modify your air and fuel mixture in real-time. Most other motors and ECUs require a tune to do that, so you don't pick up a lot of performance unless you throw your truck on the dyno, or you hop in the cab and plug a tuner into the OBD2, and you do some work. But that's not gonna be the case here. Again, this is almost going to provide double the amount of airflow to the engine without a tune being required. Unfortunately, it's not CARB-certified, so for you guys and gals in California, well, unfortunately, you're gonna have to wait a little bit until aFe gets some certification on this intake or a similar one, but if you live anywhere else, you should be good to go for emissions and inspection. Now, the other thing that I really like about this intake, in particular, is how it actually looks underneath the hood. The way aFe pulled off the actual finish on the tube itself looks very OEM, and they actually used some pretty cool kind of factory-style rubber couplers.Overall, I would say this intake actually kind of looks like it belongs under the hood. And that's honestly not the case with a lot of intake systems. They do look good for the most part, but you get kind of this jarring disconnect between the intake and the rest of the engine bay itself, especially the rest of the tubing that actually flows into the turbos. aFe really did a good job of making this look like it's right at home. Now, as far as build quality goes with the Magnum Force, I give it high remarks as well. aFe took the time to make sure that they design the intake tube out of a very nice factory-style looking plastic here. And while that might be a small detail in normal circumstances, that's actually a little bit more important if you are taking your truck off-road frequently, and you want to invest in the cold air intake.A lot of intake tubes are actually made out of steel or aluminum, which absorbs heat a little bit more, and that's actually important if you're off-road. Again, you're probably not at wide-open throttle. You may not be getting a ton of airflow underneath the hood, so a plastic intake tube is actually going to perform just a little bit better. It's not gonna be a world difference, but it is something to keep in mind. And then the heat shield included with this kit is actually made out of a really nice stainless steel or aluminum, not as important because it's not sitting very close to the motor, but they really did a good job of making it look like it meshes up nicely with everything else.It features a kind of a matte black wrinkle coat finish. It's actually a powder coat finish. And like I said, it just kind of meshes really well with the way the intake tube looks. They also took the time to throw a nice little brushed aluminum logo on here. You got a nice little logo on the airbox as well. Overall, I think as far as open-element designs go, aFe really knocked it out of the park in the aesthetics department. It just looks really nice under the hood. Now, all things considered, no tune required, what kind of performance can you get out of this particular intake? Well, I'm going to default to my usual answer, guys. You would probably get high single-digit and maybe low double-digit gains. Do a little bit of research. There are some numbers floating around out there on the internet from folks who've thrown this on an EcoBoost motor. The numbers are pretty impressive, so just take your time if you want to get specifics, but again, high single-digit, maybe low double-digit gains, no tune required. And that's honestly pretty impressive considering it's only gonna take you maybe an hour or so to throw this on.So, as far as that install goes, let me go ahead and give this a soft one out of three wrenches on the old difficulty meter. Guys, if you've never turned wrenches, maybe you're not too confident about throwing mods on your truck, this is definitely a good place to start because it's incredibly simple. And again, I'm actually gonna show you guys the install in just a little bit. So, again, if you're looking for a really nice, relatively inexpensive, very good-looking intake for your EcoBoost motor, you want a filter that's really gonna perform well off-road, maybe you take your truck on fire trails often, most other filters might not do as well, aFe's Pro Dry S Filter is gonna do a great job. So, take a look at it more on the site. If you decide to stick with this option, come back in a little bit. I'm going to show you all the tools you need to get out of the box, and then I'll show you how to get this thing bolted in. Okay, guys, before we get started, you'll need a standard drive ratchet. And really all you need are a couple of sockets. You'll need a 7, and 8, and a 10-millimeter socket. Those can be shallow, but the 10-mil is gonna need to be a deep socket.Now, obviously, to make things go a little bit quicker and easier, you'll probably want an extension, and an impact swivel socket with an impact gun is gonna make it go even quicker. Okay. So, first, we have to remove our factory airbox. We are gonna be keeping the bottom of the airbox because the new intake heat shield actually sits on top of it. So, we're just gonna depress these two tabs here. That's actually gonna unseat the top of the airbox, as you can see. Once you've done that, you also got to disconnect the temperature sensor here on the intake tube. For this, all you got to do is kind of just turn it a little bit. It's a little rubber grommet locked in. Pop it out like so.Okay. Next, we have to disconnect the clamps that secure the first half of our intake system to the tubes that connect to the turbos. So, you have some band clamps on here. You'll need a 7-millimeter socket to loosen these up. Okay. Now, you also have to loosen up the tube on the other side here. This clamp is kind of tucked down here in front of the engine covers so I can't really show exactly where it is. Go ahead and loosen both of those up. Then you can pull the entire intake as one piece. All right. So, we have the factory intake removed. Now, we have to do some work to the new intake before we throw it in the truck. Nothing too crazy. I'll show you in a second, but I really wanted to show you guys a cool comparison between our factory paper element filter and the new filter that's provided in the kit. And you can see it's a huge difference here, obviously.This truck only has a couple of thousand miles on it, guys, and this thing already looks like it's ready for replacement. We honestly don't take our trucks out that often here, so this thing just doesn't do very well for the truck, even if you're just daily driving it, let alone using the EcoBoost to its full potential. This new filter is gonna flow way more CFMs into the engine. And again, because the EcoBoost is so cool it can actually take advantage of that with no tune required. This filter is also washable and reusable. So, over time, you'll actually end up saving a little bit of money because these paper elements are surprisingly not that affordable, especially if you pick them up from the dealer direct. And other thing to point out here, I really liked the finish that they put on the new intake tube. This is very OEM in appearance. They really took the time to actually put a nice textured finish on here that very closely matches all the other plastic trim pieces on the rest of the truck.So, overall, it looks better than our factory intake tube. You can see this stuff just kind of looks really cheap, right? Then you got this, I don't even know what the hell that thing is, but this looks a lot smoother, a lot more free-flowing. And it's a physically larger intake tube, which is also again, gonna contribute to the CFMs going into the engine. So, we can ditch all this stuff. We don't need to pull any hardware off of here, but before we do for our new intake into the vehicle, we do have to actually set it up as one piece. We're going to install it the same way that the factory intake came out. So, the first thing you want to do, if it's not already installed, you want to make sure you get the weatherstripping on top of the heat shield here. This looks like a small consideration, but this actually does make an important difference. When the hood is closed, this little extra bit here ensures that the heat shield is completely sealed up so that the new filter inside isn't getting heat soaked with all that hot air from inside the engine bay. So, go ahead and throw the weatherstripping on here if it's not already installed. Trim it if you want to. You don't necessarily have to. Then what you need to do is you also have to grab these bolts provided in the kit here. We're gonna be using both of these bolts with the flat washers and crush washers in order to secure the intake tube to our new heat shield. So, go ahead and line up the holes on the tube itself. We have some pre-threaded holes on the heat shield. Just make sure both of those line up, and then we'll get both of these bolts in here. We can tighten these down with a 10-mil socket, and then we can throw our intake in place.Now to tighten all this stuff down, you're gonna need a 10-millimeter socket. Okay. So, once you got the intake tube secured to the heat shield and the weatherstripping in place, now all you need to do is throw the actual air filter in there, and we're also going to install the rubber couplers to adapt the new intake tube to the flow tubes that go to the turbos. Obviously, the bigger one here goes on the bigger outlet on the new intake tube. And you're gonna be using these same band clamps for all of these here. The band clamps are sized up, so just make sure you're grabbing the right sized ones depending on which coupler and which hose you're working on. And you'll also need an 8-millimeter socket to tighten these clamps down.All right. So, once you got both of those rubber couplers in place, like I said, all we need to do is throw the filter in place as well. This already has the appropriate size clamp on there. Just make sure you have that on the end there so you can secure these things. And this is also gonna use that same 8-mil socket. So, once you got the filter in place, now everything is assembled as one piece, go ahead and grab that same 8-mil socket and let's go ahead and throw this thing in the truck and get it bolted in place. All right. So, as we're throwing our intake in place here, we want to make sure that the heat shield lines up with the factory air box here, and you're gonna ideally want to get both of these tabs here to clamp down on the recesses inside the heat shield. As you're getting that seated, you also want to come over to the flow tubes here to the turbos and line up both of the rubber couplers on the new intake tubes and get those seated all the way as well. You want to make sure you have the appropriate band clamps on the other ends here so that we can cinch these down with our 8-mil socket once we get them in place.All right. Now our heat shield is lined up here on both sides so we can cinch these little plastic clamps down. Okay, now the last thing we need to do is reinstall our temperature sensor. There is a hole here on the new intake tube. It may have the fitting already installed. If not, you just have to press the fitting in there. It's a factory-style fitting for the temperature sensor. Once you've done that, go ahead and grab the temperature sensor itself, orient it so that it slides in all the way. Give it a good rotation, and it should be locked in place. All right, guys. Once you got the temperature sensor plugged in, go ahead and turn the motor over, and that should do it for you.That will wrap up the install. And that also wraps up my quick review of the aFe Magnum FORCE Stage 2 Cold Air Intake featuring the really cool Pro Dry S Filter, fitting your 2015 to 2016 3.5-liter EcoBoost powered F-150.
