Review & Install Video
Hi everybody, I'm Justin with AmericanMuscle.com and this is my quick review of the Recon smoked and clear Side Mirror Lenses with amber LEDs, available for your '09 to '14 F-150. You should be checking out the Recon kit here if you're not a big fan of that big orange reflector that lives on the factory '09 to '14 mirrors and basically just sticks out like a sore thumb. Now, by going with Recon's kit, you're going to be replacing that orange factory reflector with either a smoked lens or a clean clear lens here, making for a huge upgrade in overall appearance over that reflector from the factory, in addition to making the switch to the modern LED lighting.
Now, this is what Recon does, guys. They're known for producing a ton of useful and stylish exterior and interior lighting and accessories that are only going to improve the appearance and visibility and lighting of your truck. Now, this is definitely going to be more of an appearance upgrade as opposed to a functionality upgrade because honestly the factory turn signals in your mirrors don't operate really all that bad. You might be getting some visibility improvements here with the LEDs of course, but overall this is really just going to be a kit for someone who enjoys a smoked or clear lens as opposed to that orange factory lens.
As you can see, guys, this kit from Recon is pretty simple. They are throwing in some ABS Plastic Spacers here to be used in conjunction with the LED housings. These things do feature nine LEDs bright-red or amber LEDs that would be a welcome improvement, especially when you're talking about the smoked option here because you don't want to lose any visibility. And overall, you are getting some great visibility when switching to an LED as opposed to your factory lighting. Now, this is going to be a great option, again, to make yourself a little bit more visible when it comes to those turn signals or you do have the option of wiring these things up as a running light if you choose to. Now again, besides being much brighter than your factory bulbs, the LEDs are actually going to last much longer. In fact, 50 times longer than your factory bulbs, or roughly 50,000 hours, so again, pretty much the life of your truck here, guys. And because Recon does choose to use an amber bulb or LED with this kit, these particular lenses are going to be 50-state legal.
Now, in my opinion, guys, the price tag at around a hundred bucks might be a little bit on the high side here given what this product is, but again, Recon's quality and overall fitment here usually command a little bit more dough, especially compared to the generic options you might find on other sites.
And also the install can be a little tricky here, guys, because again, you essentially have to dissect your side mirrors to get everything in and wired up correctly. Start off by removing the factory mirror glass by releasing the tabs using a long flat-head screwdriver. After that, unplug the heated mirror harness, if equipped. From there, remove the four T15 Torx screws securing the housing. Fold the actual mirror in so you can gain access to the front cover, pry it off in order to separate the housing from the front path. After that simply pry off the factory reflector using a flat-head screwdriver and install the Recon in reverse order.
As for the wiring, you're going to want to tap the Recon lights into the power and ground factory turn signal harness, which is very easy to find using a quick splice connector or cramp or even a soldering iron. Reassemble the entire side mirror assembly and you should be good to go. Now, using the basic tools I've already listed you should be able to knock both sides out in roughly an hour from start to finish. There is a little bit of work, again, involved here, guys, but it's very simple and very straightforward, so for that I'll give this one an easy one out of three wrenches on my difficulty meter.
The Recon Turn Signal Kit, while a tad on the pricey side, replaces that ugly orange factory reflector with a slick smoked or clear option along with the benefits of the modern LED lighting which overall makes for a huge improvement in my opinion.
So be sure to check out more Recon options for your truck here at AmericanMuscle.com.
