      Video Review & Installation

So if you own an F150 you've probably seen this driving around on the streets at some point and it's that very classic and retro tailgate light bar that also functions as a turn signal indicator, a hazard light and a brake light. Well we're finally happy to offer one here at americantrucks.com and this is a universal application. It'll actually fit on any F150, there are plenty of ways to get this thing installed, but no matter which way you decide to do it the wiring is very straightforward and if you have a newer F150 with a tow package you can actually get away with a plug and play installation, no wiring necessary. At any rate, it is a pretty straightforward job so I'm going to give the install a pretty simple one out of three wrenches on my difficulty meter and it should take you thirty minutes to an hour even if you've never wired anything before on your truck. Now there are a couple cool things that I like about this, it is weatherproof and the wiring is pretty robust underneath so even if you take your truck off-road, you put it thorough some rain, snow, water, etc. you don't got to worry about this thing shorting out on you any time soon. So again, you want that really classic look on the back end of your F150 but you want to do it with a really modern LED kit like this one, go ahead and stick around, I'll show you guys what tools you need and then I'm going to walk you through how to get this thing wired up, step by step. All right, to install our light bar you will need at minimum a pair of snips and some pliers, but optional and very helpful tools include an actual wire stripping tool, some zip ties and some electrical tape. All right, so obviously before we get this thing wired up we have to get it in place first, right, so what you want to do is install the brackets on the back of the light bar here, there are four in total. Make sure they're evenly spaced. We got two on the far ends and two in the center here. Once you've done that you can actually thread this up underneath the rear bumper and get it in place. This is pretty flexible so you can take your time and you can put a little bit of bend on this, don't bend it too much, but that should help you actually get it in there. All right, now that the light bar is roughly in the area where it's going to live, you want to grab the adhesion promoter in the kit. This stuff is pretty nasty, you don't want to touch it with your bare hands, you'll also want to avoid touching your paint and plastic with this stuff, this is going to help that 3M bond nicely. What you're going to do, you're going to wipe down the areas where you're going to peal back that 3M and stick the light bar down. Once you do this, it's going to be really hard to pull it off so you want to get this done right the first time, just take your time, make sure the bar is flush on both sides where it's going to live. All right, now that the light bar is in place, we're underneath the truck here. There's a couple of ways to wire this up. We're going to go with option two in the instructions here, we're actually going to wire it into the seven pin connection for the trailer. We're going to disconnect this guy real quick. You want to make sure you have all this wiring exposed. Now, this is the four pin connector that would normally connect to the four pin right here but we don't want this to be hanging out on the front of the bumper. We're actually going to cut this off, we're going to use the exposed leads themselves, we're going to splice them into the trailer hitch using the supplied clips. All right now once you cut that you'll want to expose these wires and take this sleeve off a little bit. All right, so once you got this wiring exposed you're going to wire it into the hitch like I just said. You're going to go green wire to green wire, yellow wire to yellow wire, brown wire to brown wire, black wire to the white wire and then this white wire, which is our backup light, that's going to go into this little grey wire right here. All right, so once you got all this wiring spliced together, you have to address these red wires. These originally were not exposed with that four pin connector, they were actually tucked away inside the sleeve here. These actually just splice back together to complete the circuit. So go ahead and tie these back together, once you've done that you can plug in the hitch and do a function test of your lights before you actually cover them up with electrical tape. All right, so as you can see our lights are working good, we're ready to button everything up so we're going to go ahead and insulate these a little bit, protect them from the elements with some electrical tape. Then we're going to secure everything using zip ties. So as you can see, even with a little bit of splicing it's a very straightforward job thanks to all the hardware they provide in the kit. And that also wraps up my review of the Putco Blade 60" LED Light Bar fitting your F150. I'm Travis, thanks for watching, and for all things F150 keep it right here at americantrucks.com.
