      Video Review & Installation

Justin: The Street Fire Coils by MSD will be a slightly more affordable option for the '04 to '08 3-valve F150 owners who might be looking to replace a faulty set of stock coils with something aftermarket and something from one of the most trusted names in ignition. Now, the MSD coils will come in a set of eight. It will feature that gloss black finish, along with a corresponding one-year warranty, all for right around the $200 price point. Site's gonna go soft two to three wrenches on the difficulty meter for this job, guys, very simple plug and play job. So leave yourself, I would say an hour at most, probably less to get this one knocked out, but if you hang with me for a bit, we'll walk you through that job later in the video. So one thing I do wanna point out before going any further is that switching to an aftermarket coil like the Street Fire here by itself traditionally isn't gonna yield any power gains. And well, if it does, that's typically because the coils you are replacing are probably going bad or already bad and therefore not allowing your 4.6 or your 5.4 to perform at peak levels. Now, that's not to say there aren't any benefits to installing these, but I don't wanna stand up here and mislead you guys thinking that this is going to lead to some massive power gains or anything like that. Now, what these guys will do is help smooth out the idle a little bit and your revs, barring good plugs, of course, also help clear up any high RPM misfires, and possibly even improve your fuel economy, depending, again, on the shape of your existing coils. Now, MSD claims that all of this will be possible, thanks to the increased voltage output over the stockers that you are replacing. But if you guys didn't know, this is what MSD does best, right? They've been producing high-quality ignition systems and components for over four decades now, and I would say is easily one of the most common and recognizable brands that you'll see at any racetrack around the world. Now, speaking of the Street Fires here, MSD is gonna build these 3-valve coils using their patented primary and secondary winding internals and they will feature a factory-style female socket coil wire which is designed to make these a very simple plug and play swap on any 5-liter truck at home. Finally, guys, the cherry on top will be the nice gloss black finish and Street Fire logo on the top of each body, which will be visible under the hood if you don't have coil covers installed. And that, of course, will just make for a small but noticeable bump in your appearance aside from the bump and spark. Well, what would he say we stopped talking about the Street Fires and show you just what it takes to get these installed on your rig at home? So without further ado, check out our detailed walkthrough and tool breakdown right now.Man: Tools for this install include a 7-millimeter deep socket, 3/4-inch extensions, and a ratchet or electric ratchet. For this install, we're only gonna need a few simple hand tools and a lot of patience. Let's get into it. First, we're gonna disconnect these stock coil harnesses. It's just a simple pinch and pull. Now, there is four on each side. You guys are gonna struggle to see a little bit of the one in the back. It is far back there, but we'll get that disconnected as well. All right. The one on the front driver side is a little hard to get to. The power steering reservoir bracket is in the way. So take your time with that one, and then we'll get that disconnected. And this one in the back is a little bit easier to get to than the passenger side. All right. After we get those unplugged, we're gonna get to the 7-millimeter bolts on each one. Now, I am using a 1/2-inch extension because they are a little harder to get to. The fourth one in the back is the hardest to go to. And after we get this last one out, we're gonna do the same thing on the other side. After those bolts are removed, we can get to removing the coils, and it's as easy as pulling them up. Now repeat that on the other side. Now, with the stock coils removed, we can get the new MSD ones put in. And we're gonna be reusing the factory hardware to bolt them down. Again, we're gonna be reusing the factory bolts. So go ahead and grab your 7-millimeter socket and get those bolted in. All right. And we're gonna repeat the same on the other side. Last step is to get all eight harnesses plugged back in. Now that you're all done here, repeat the same on the other side. That's gonna wrap it up for this review and install of the MSD Fire Ignition Coils, fitting all '04 to '08 V8 with a 3-valve.
