Simple installation for anyone.
The Extang Blackmax here is the next generation of snap-style bed covers and one that makes use in all weather and climates a bit easier thanks to the sliding snaps on the included rails. The materials will include a UV-resistant, military-grade vinyl for the cover itself along with the Billet aluminum rails all around the mid $200 price point. Installation will not involve any drilling or permanent modification so therefore figure a soft one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter here and about 30 minutes or so to complete from start to finish. But as always, hang 'til the end guys and we'll show you how it's done. Now, I would say snap covers here are one of the loved or hated bed cover options in the category that truck owners do consider when looking for affordable bed cover solutions. Now, a big reason why some owners might actually not dig these things too much is because, traditionally, that snap system can be a bit tricky, given areas that see a big swing in climate or weather, basically from hot to cold or vice versa. That's because the vinyl here does tend to shrink up when the weather gets cold, and that's what can make snapping all of the little buttons on the outside of the cover a bit of a challenge. Well, listen, guys, Extang came up with an awesome way to make that a bit easier and that is by allowing all of the little individual snaps here on the rails to move around freely. Now, on top of that, the Extang Blackmax here and those adjustable snaps do also feature a tension tab which will prevent those guys from sliding around on you when you don't want them to. But aside from the adjustable snaps we just talked about, Extang also incorporates some adjustable clamps to be used with the horizontal bow portion here. That's gonna help this thing from sagging or drooping on you, even if you get a little bit of weight on the cover itself in the form of rain or even snow. Now, Extang says you can opt for the lower position, which I actually like visually because it's gonna help keep this thing taut on those colder weather trucks in addition to providing you with a sportier look, basically a little bit more flush. Now, Extang says the high position here, which will offer better performance and improve gas mileage. But listen, guys, that whole bed cover improving MPG rumor has been proven untrue a few times, so therefore I don't want you guys to be misled in thinking this is gonna be the magic bullet for improving your miles per gallon on your truck because that's just simply not the case. Instead, what this cover will offer is one of the most affordable designs in the category along with a great fit overall. Now, the snap design also does something other covers simply cannot and that is give you access easily at all four corners of your bed. Got a bed mounting toolbox nearest the cab. Well, the snap cover here allows you to pop the snaps nearest of your window and grab whatever it is you need out of that box. With a folding or a rolling cover, you'd have to start at the tailgate, either fold or roll that thing completely out of the way in order to access stuff in the front of the bed. That's not gonna be the case here with the snap cover. Now, with the perks of the snap cover also come the downfalls, right? For instance, there's no way to really fully lock the bed contents as you would be able to with a folding or a rolling cover. Instead, anybody can just walk by, pop off these snaps, and grab the stuff in your bed. Also, keep in mind, guys, that popping each snap off in order to access the full length of the bed is gonna be a bit time-consuming. Figure there's 48 individual snaps here securing the cover. So, if you're the type of owner who is always in a hurry and needs access to the bed often, the snap-style cover here might not be for you. But pros and cons aside, the materials and build quality for the Extang are gonna be very solid, given that mid $200 price point. You're looking at extremely thick black vinyl here for the main cover material. Has been UV-treated, which will help reduce fading over the years. Now, all of the bows and the rails themselves have been constructed from heavy-duty aluminum, which have been given a lifetime warranty along with a 10-year warranty for the vinyl cover itself. And now, let's segue into the installation here. And again, guys, very, very straightforward stuff. No drilling. No permanent modification. But to give you a better idea of what you're in for, here's a detailed walk-through along with that quick tool breakdown.Tools used for this install, 3/16" Allen key. Optional is an impact with a 3/16" Allen key.All right. Now, we're gonna be working on the ground for just a minute. I have the rails laid out the way they need to be. The tailgate is clearly marked. Now, we're gonna slap it all together and then place it on the truck. So, you see, this is a quick little disconnect. So, if you do need to take it off your truck, you can. It's gonna snap just like that. Same for the front rail. Just open that up. All right. Then, we're gonna do it for this other side as well. And the last one. Now, it should look like this, and we're ready to put on the truck. All right. Now, we're gonna pick up the frame and put it on the truck. Be careful. I'm going to place it on the side just like this. There is a rubber gasket on it already. I'm just gonna slide it over. All right. So, now that we have our rail system on the truck, we're gonna go all around the truck making sure everything is set evenly and that we have the same distance... You'll see the bed id also tapered in. The rails are thicker right here in comparison to back here. What we're gonna do is we're gonna take just an eye measurement right here, and right here make sure they're even. And then, we're gonna go down the rail as well to the bed. Make sure that that's even as well. And then, we're ready to clamp that down, put our enforcing bows in, and then our tarp. All right. Now is the time to clamp it down. It's a really nice system. These two hooks are gonna go right into that and you'll see where these stickers are. I'm just centering it up with that sticker. And then, we're gonna take our clamp, slide it up and in. This is a little tight, but that's the way you want it. Now, it is a 3/16" Allen key. They do supply you with an Allen key if you don't have one. I, however, am going to use an impact on a low setting and clamp this down until I see that that gasket is squished and working. All right. Now, we're gonna move on to the other side. I like to start in the middle first though. All right. Now, before you put this clamp on, just check your fitment again all the way around. Make sure that you have the same reveal. All right. All right. Now, there are different sized clamps. Again, going back to the fact that this bed tapers down towards the rear, the smaller one is gonna go towards the back like that. Then, the large one is gonna go right there. Now, we're gonna clamp these down and move to the other side. Take our little C-clamp here, slide that up and in. Get our hardware started. All right. All right. Just make sure your clamps are in the right place. And get your hardware. Start it. All right. Now that I have the rail system clamped down, I have the bows just sitting here. They are nicely labeled. This one's tail. This one is middle. What we're gonna do is we are going to slip the end right in there. And then, this in spring-loaded so you can just slide it in like that. Now, we're gonna go forward and put this one in. This side as well. All right. So, before we put our tonneau cover on, I'm just spreading these snaps down the rails to the approximate locations where I think the snaps are gonna be. We're gonna start at the corners and then work towards the middle. So, you'll be able to position these snaps accordingly when the time comes to snap it. And we're gonna do that all around the truck and then start putting our cover on.All right. So, I have my tonneau cover. I wanna make sure these straps are inside of it. And we're going to set it on the top of the cab, top of the box here and put our two snaps in the corner. Again, we're just doing the corners right now and then we're gonna worry about the sides and the middle. One. All right. And now, we're gonna roll it backwards. Be careful of your bows. Remember, you got another bow here. And then, I am going to stand on the bumper, pull this tonneau cover towards the corners. It's not that tough, but if you're doing this on a summer day, it's gonna be really nice and easy. This last snap here. Move on to the next corner. All right, there's that one.All right. Now, again, we're gonna position our snaps all the way down. All right. And we're gonna start snapping. Then, you're gonna do this all the way around the truck. All right. Now, we're gonna move on to the tailgate. Position our snaps into place. All right. That's gonna wrap up my install of the Extang Blackmax Snap Tonneau Cover, and for all things F-150, keep it here at americantrucks.com.

Good cover, bad packaging
Cover looks good and installed ok. I'm only giving 3 stars because of packaging. I think I was sent an open box item. In the box I received instructions for installing a rough country lift kit. The parts were in Ziploc bags. After installing the frame onto truck and started putting cover onto rails. I found that the head rail and tailgate rail were both missing a tab for holding cover in place. I had to take the frame back off of truck. I found the missing tabs loose in the box. I was able to put those tabs onto the rails. Overall happy with the cover, frustrated with everything else.Helpful (0)

Unless you are the Hulk, don't buy it.
I tried on three separate occasions to get the cover on. It is impossible for me! The clips are too tight, even after I adjusted them for "cold" Florida weather. I wish I kept the box, it would be going right back. Hard pass.Helpful (0)
