So if you own an '07 to '13 5.3 liter-powered Silverado or Sierra, and you're watching this video, then you've probably figured out that the easiest way to squeeze some extra horsepower out of that motor is with a handheld tuner like this one. Now, as far as tuning goes, there are generally two options. You have preloaded tunes and you have custom tunes, right? Well, preloaded tunes are awesome because they're easy, they're simple, they're generally more affordable, and there's just simply not a lot of guesswork involved. You press a couple buttons and you get some more power, right? And if you wanna do it as affordably as possible, then you should be checking out the inTune i3 tuner from DiabloSport. At around the $370 price point, this is one of the least expensive handheld tuners currently available. And I'm happy to say, it comes with a ton of preloaded tunes. It even comes with an economy tune, so you can squeeze some extra MPGs out of your truck if you're not interested in performance. But if you do wanna get some performance gains, they have tunes for every single octane that you can get at the pump including an 87 octane performance tune so you don't have to spend any more at the pump, but you'll still squeeze out some extra horsepower and torque. And on the extreme end of things, they actually have a 93 octane tune preloaded on here if you wanna go all out and get as much performance as possible. We decided to go middle of the road here and we actually ran our truck on the Dyno stock. And our truck ended up making 256 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. We then installed the 91 octane performance tune, just to see what we can get out of it and we ended up making 258 horsepower and 279 pound-feet of torque, which makes for peak gains of 2 horsepower and 16 pound-feet of torque. Now, those are modest peak gains but if you take a second look at those graphs, you'll see some pretty impressive curve gains. We actually saw curve gains as high as 27 horsepower and 30 pound-feet of torque and that's just with the 91 octane tune. If you wanted to get even more, you could probably do so quite easily with the 93 performance tune instead. Now, the inTune i3 also does some other cool things that allows you to data log your truck in real time, if you do wanna go the route of custom tuning later on down the road. And I'm happy to say that if you ever get any check engine lights, you can easily read and clear them thanks to the onboard diagnostics with the provided OBD-II cable. So, again, if you want one of the most affordable tuners currently available, you want tons of preloaded tunes to get some easy performance, go ahead and stick around, I'm gonna show you guys how this thing works. I can't really give this thing a hard install rating, all you gotta do is plug it in and press some buttons. So I'm gonna give it a very simple one of the three wrenches on my difficulty meter. Really, anybody can use this device if you've ever used a smartphone. So, again, let's go ahead and get started. All right, so using the i3 is pretty simple, all you gotta do is grab the data cable, plug it into the tuner, and then hook it up to your OBD-II port, which is located directly underneath the steering column. All right, so once you got the tuner plugged in, it's pretty straightforward. It's gonna give you this little disclaimer here, just advising you not to use the tuner while you're driving. Go ahead and click Yes to agree. Now, there are a couple options on the home screen here and obviously, we wanna know what kind of power we can make, right? So the first thing we're gonna do is going over how to actually tune your truck. So select the tune vehicle option. It's gonna ask that you make sure the key is in the on position before continuing this process, that's gonna ensure you have a strong, solid connection to your ECU unit the entire time.Once you've put your key in the on position, it's gonna bring you to the home screen for tuning your truck. And there are two options available. One is the easy tune, one is the advanced tune. The advanced tune should only be used if you know what you're doing as far as custom tuning goes. The advanced tune option allows you to make certain changes to engine parameters like timing, air, and fuel. However, if you make changes to those parameters and you don't know what you're doing, you could cause severe physical damage to your motor. At any rate, we're only interested in seeing what the preloaded tune can do so we're gonna select easy tune. Now, the performance tunes are based on the octane rating of the fuel that you pick up at the pump. An 87 octane tune will provide some minor improvements in performance, but if you wanna go all out, you're gonna want premium fuel. We're gonna see what the middle of the road at 91 octane tune can do for us. Now, it's gonna ask you to confirm that you wanna use the selected tune, go ahead and click Yes. And, again, there are options here for installing custom tunes. We're not worrying about that right now. We're just installing the preloaded tunes so we're gonna click Install standard tune. Now, once you've selected your preloaded tune, it's gonna give you some additional options. You can actually firm up your shift points. You can go with a firm or a hard shift or if you wanna make changes to the ECU parameters from the preloaded tune without actually adding performance, you can select modify stock tune. Let's go ahead and firm up our shift point slightly. And we're gonna select Yes to continue. We are not interested in changing our tire size so select No. We're not interested in changing our gear ratio, obviously, so we're gonna select No as well. We're gonna have a little bit of fun here, we're gonna remove our speed limiter. Once you've selected the options for those drop-downs, it's gonna tell you that it's gonna begin installing a tune. But first, it's going to create a backup file of your stock ECU profile. So select Yes to continue. All right, once it saves those backup files, it's gonna ask do you wanna confirm to install the tune with the options you may have selected earlier, click Yes to continue. Now, at this point, the device is gonna begin installing your new tune file. It's also very important that you do not turn your key to the off position. You also do not want to unplug the tuner during this process because that will interrupt the read/write process, and it might cause issues if you try and turn your truck over. All right, once it's finished installing that tune file, it's gonna give you this confirmation screen letting you know that it's complete. Go ahead and click continue. All right, once the device has rebooted and it's brought you back to this disclaimer screen, the tuning process is officially complete. That's really all there is to it. If you guys wanna stick around, I'm gonna show you all the other functions of the i3 tuner. Next up is our scan tool. This allows you to read and clear diagnostic trouble codes commonly known as check engine lights. Again, when you start this process, you wanna make sure your key is in the on position. Now, once you have accessed the scan tool program, there are a couple of different functions in here. The first two are related to those check engine lights and that's reading and clearing trouble codes. If you have a check engine light, you can plug in the tuner to the OBD-II port and you can click on show trouble codes. It's gonna process some information and it's gonna show you any codes that might be underlying that check engine light. You can do a little bit of research and it'll tell you what the underlying mechanical or electrical issue is. If you wanna clear that check engine light, it's pretty straightforward. All you gotta do is click on clear trouble codes, it's gonna ask if you wanna confirm, go ahead and click Yes. It's gonna take a minute to process and it will clear all those trouble codes, and get rid of those lights on your dash. Just keep in mind, if you do not actually clear the underlying mechanical or electrical issue, that light will probably return. Another cool feature of the i3 tuner is the ability to data log your truck in real time. And this is, basically, a file that gets created that records all of your engine parameters and performance while you're driving around. If you want to data log your truck for the purposes of troubleshooting or custom tuning, simply select the data logging function. All right, once the tuner is finished processing, it'll bring you to the data logging home screen. And you can see there are a couple of options here. The one that's most important is the record function. The record function is gonna turn on data logging and it's gonna record all those engine parameters that you've selected. But first, you need to make sure you're selecting the right parameters. To do so, you're gonna click on Add PIDs to list. PIDs are simply the different parameters that you can monitor and they're categorized. We're gonna select a few, just as an example. There are simply too many to go over. Let's take a look at some of our engine parameters here.Again, you can see, there's tons of different options under each category. Let's monitor our engine load. Once you've selected that parameter, it'll disappear from this screen. If you're finished selecting any parameters, hit the back button, and it's gonna ask that you wanna confirm your PID selection. Go ahead and click Yes. Once you've selected all the PIDs you wanna monitor, you can select the record button. Once you hit the record button, it'll automatically begin recording that engine parameter while you're driving around. And you can see, even though our truck is off, it has a default value of 64%. If you monitor to this in real time, while you're driving around, you will see these parameters change as you're driving. Now, once you're done data logging, you can hit the back button and it's gonna ask if you wanna save that data log file. Go ahead and click Yes. Now, once you've hit that back button and you've saved that data log file, that data log file will be stored on the tuner for retrieval later. All you need to do is hook up the tuner to your computer with the appropriate DiabloSport software and the provided data cable in the kit and you'll be able to read that data log file for the purposes of troubleshooting or custom tuning. Now, even though we're currently only monitoring engine load as an example, the DiabloSport tuner does build a set of default parameters that it will automatically record. If you do not wanna add your own PIDs or you don't wanna make changes, you can hit restore default PIDs and it will restore all those default parameters that the DiabloSport would normally data log out of the box if you did not make any changes. Now, if you wanna confirm that those default PIDs have been restored, you can hit the record button and it will display all those engine parameters that I just mentioned. All right, the last thing we have to go over are the settings for the tuner itself. They are very user-friendly but I'll give you a quick walkthrough even still. Now, one of the cool things about the i3 tuner is the ability to wirelessly connect to a network and update itself. If you want to do so, select Wi-Fi configuration. And it's pretty straightforward. It's really like in a smartphone. You have your Wi-Fi setup, you have your connection info, and you have an advanced setup if you wanna add a network that is not visible through Wi-Fi. But, at any rate, hit the Wi-Fi setup and the device will automatically scan and display the available networks. We're not gonna connect right now because we're not interested in that. But if you wanted to view that connection info once you've connected, you will be able to find your physical address as well as your IP address and your SSID under connection information. Now, analog input setup is an advanced topic and that's not something we're gonna be going over today. Basically, this allows you to directly connect certain physical gauges and monitors, something like a boost gauge or an AFR gauge but there is advanced coding properties under analog input setup. If you know how to do this, I don't have to explain it to you. And if you're not sure what that is, that's simply outside of the scope of our discussion currently. But the i3 tuner does support analog inputs if you decide to install them on your vehicle. You can also make changes to the sound and display for the device itself. If the screens a little bit too dark or bright, you can make that adjustment here from 0 to 100%. And the same applies to the audible beeps as you select different options, you can change that from 85% to 100% or you can turn it off entirely so it doesn't make noise while you're using the tuner. Now, besides changing the brightness and volume, the last thing we have to go over are the Advanced Options. And under Advanced options, you can have the device automatically check for updates and you can also troubleshoot the device using the tech support menu. You'll never really need to go in here unless tech support tells you to do so. So we're not actually gonna go over these settings. So as you saw, tuning your truck is really straightforward. It only takes a couple of minutes and a couple of button presses, right? And that also wraps up my review of the inTune i3 tuner from DiabloSport, fitting your '07 to '13 5.3 liter-powered Silverado or Sierra. I'm Travis, thanks for watching.
