Hey, guys, Adam here with americantrucks.com. Today, we're taking a closer look at, listening to, and installing the Borla Stinger S-Type dual rear exit cat-back exhaust system fitting all '09 to '13 5.3-liter Silverado 1500s. If you're the owner of '09 to '13 Silverado, you might be looking to ditch or factory cat-back to get something with a little more aggression, get you to beef up that sound and volume, as well as a little bit more power and torque.Now, if you're looking to pick all that up, the Stinger S-Type, in my opinion, is one of the best cat-backs for your V8 simply because, as you heard from our sound clips, it is pretty aggressive but not over the top. If I had to give it a rating, I'm giving it three out of five on our loudness meter simply because you get a deep and throaty sound, but you're not getting a whole lot of drone inside the cab as you heard from those clips. Now, if you're looking to pick this one up for yourself, it's got the highest quality 304 stainless steel, which we'll take a closer look at sitting next to our factory system. You can get this whole rear exit one for just about 1000 bucks, which, again, this one is a premium top-tier exhaust, just like we would expect from Borla. It's a perfect fit, direct fit, one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter for the installation. I'm going to walk you through that, but I want you to know simple hand tools will do the trick. A ratchet and simple socket set or a cordless impact like I use. WD-40 or PB B'laster is definitely your friend if you've got some rust under there, which you'll clearly see once you get under your truck. The whole system comes off in one piece. If you don't have a lift and jack, I'd highly recommend getting one, but if you have a lifted truck, of course, you can crawl right under, but you might have to cut it into a couple pieces since it does drop down in one piece. Now, I'm going to walk you through that here, so without further ado, let's get to it.Tools needed for this install are PB B'laster or WD-40, hanger removal tool, 21-millimeter wrench, cordless impact or ratchet, 13-millimeter deep socket, 15-millimeter deep, 21-millimeter deep socket. So, we're kicking off our uninstall here with a 13-millimeter socket and our cordless impact. If you don't have one of these, a simple ratchet does a trick as well. As you can see, we're working on a lift which makes our life a lot easier. We've got a pole jack supporting the back end. If you're working on the ground, make sure you have a hydraulic jack and some jack stands to support it. Kick things off here with our socket, we're going to tackle this band clamp here right behind our catalytic converter, and that's going to be the only bolt holding on our factory cat-back. The whole thing should come off in one piece. Once we disconnect this band clamp, we'll tackle the hangers. So, let's start up here and work our way back. All right, next up, we're going to use our hanger removal tool to pop these hangers out of the factory isolators. You can pick up this tool at your local auto parts store if you don't have one, definitely makes your life a whole lot easier. All right, now we're going to tackle the hanger right near our tailpipe tip. This one is going to actually cause the whole exhaust to drop down onto our rear axle. So, you just want to be careful that you're supporting the weight here so it doesn't drop down on top of you. All right, so at this point, we're hanging on the crossbar here as well as the rear axle. We're just going to feed the one end underneath and pull the whole thing out in one piece. All right, guys, so we got our Borla Stinger S-Type exhaust pieced together on the floor next to our factory cat-back from our '09 Silverado.And as you can see, there are clear differences between the two systems, especially because of the dual rear exit that we're working with today. Now, we'll get to that in just a second, but I wanted to start focusing on the muffler differences. As you can see, size is definitely a factor here, but just because our S-Type muffler is smaller does not mean we're getting a smaller amount of volume or aggression. This is actually gonna be a ton more aggressive, as you heard from our sound clips earlier, and in my opinion, it's one of the best sounds you can get for your 5.3. I'm a huge fan of the Borla Stinger S-Type. It's not too loud, it's not too quiet, it's right in the middle, and it lets people know it's aftermarket without going too overboard. Now, this one's going to be a full 304 stainless steel cat-back, the highest quality system on the market you can get. So, if you're located in a wintry weather area like we are here on the east coast, seeing a lot of road salt in those wintry weather months, 304 stainless is the best route you can go because of its durability and longevity. Now, it's got a 2-3/4 inch inlet, the 2-1/4 inch outlet on both sides working its way up to its dual rear exit system. Now, as you can see, the tailpipe exit is a huge upgrade over the factory option here, which basically had no tip and just dumped out the side in a pretty ugly fashion in my opinion. This one's got dual 4-inch polished stainless steel tips. It looks incredible coming out the rear end of your Silverado, a huge style upgrade as well as aggression upgrade. Now, the dual rear exit, in my opinion, is one of the best exit styles on the market, but obviously, that's personal opinion. If you're not a fan of the dual rear exit, there's also dual split exit, side exit. There's a bunch of different exit styles on the market for you to choose from, definitely can fit your preference with some of the options out there. Now, without further ado, I'm going to get this installed on our truck, so let's get to it. Kicking off the install of our Borla Stinger S-Type, we're going to start back here at the catalytic converter with our extension pipe. As you can see, this one has two hangers as opposed to one from our factory exhaust. On our truck here, we're only going to be using one of them.The secondary hanger is going to depend on your body length, your trim package, your cab length, there's a whole bunch of factors that go into that. If you have a secondary isolator on your frame, you can attach that second one. If not, you can leave it be. So, let's feed this over our crossmember here, get it into place at our catalytic converter, and bolt it down with our factory clamp. All right, so we want to leave this just a little bit loose. Just tighten it down just a tad, just so you can leave a little bit of room for adjustment. If we need to come back and make sure everything lines up properly, we can, and at the end of the complete install, we'll tighten everything down to spec. All right, now it's time to stick our muffler into place on that extension pipe we just installed. Now, when you're installing your clamps provided in the kit, one of them is going to be a bit larger than the rest, that's going to go over our inlet here on the catalytic converter side or the engine side of the exhaust. The smaller clamps are going to be for the 2-1/4 inch pipes on the exit side. So, we're gonna install the muffler next and tighten down that clamp just a little bit. All right, now we can work on installing our over-axle pipes, which will lead to our exit. Now, this is where the adjustment is going to come into play here. Once we attach it to the appropriate side, which it's labeled for, so keep an eye out for that, we're going to make our adjustments to the muffler and the extension pipe to line this up with our factory hanger. All right now we can work on the opposite side here. Make sure you're putting the appropriate clamp over top of the outlet side here on your muffler. All right, now we can put our clamp over our passenger side tailpipe tip, slide it into place over the over-axle pipe. Now, in order to install our driver's side tailpipe, we have to install an additional hanger and isolator provided to us by Borla. What we're going to do is actually remove the nut on the bolt closest to the inside of the truck holding on our trailer hitch to the frame. So, as you can see, there's two bolts here. The one closest to the inside of the truck or closest to the shocks here in the back, we're going to remove that nut, install our new hanger into place here, and then throw up our driver's side tailpipe. I got my 21-millimeter wrench here. You're going to hold onto the top of the bolt head and a socket gonna work on the bottom half here. Once we get that out, put this into place and we're going to throw our factory bolt back up there. All right, now it's time to install that driver's side tailpipe. All right, at this point, we can just tighten down this last clamp. All right, before you go any further, just go back and make sure everything is tightened down how you want it and the exit tips are aligned properly.Last step in the process here is to take the heat shield provided to us by Borla and we're going to wrap these brake lines since they are pretty close to the exhaust here, we wouldn't want them to burn or melt. What we gonna to do is we're gonna wrap this around and this little flap here actually has adhesive to it. So once you have it wrapped around both brake lines, you can fold this in and the adhesive will stick together, and you're good to go. That's going to wrap up my review and install of the Borla Stinger S-Type dual rear exit cat-back exhaust system for all '09 to '13, 5.3 Silverado 1500s. Sounds great, looks great, love it
Took just over an hour to install in garage with truck on jack stands. Hardest part was removing OEM exhaust which I eventually cut it two pieces. High quality product with great fit and finish. Sounds great, looking forward to it breaking it and sounding even better. Quiet rumble at cruising speeds and no drone at all on highway(I’m tuned with AFM deleted) but when you step on it at all, it turns heads in a hurry. Makes the truck sound like it should. Loud scale 1 to 10 I would give it 7.5 to 8. Very happy and would buy again with out hesitation and highly recommend. Installed on my 2016 GMC Sierra SLT Crew Cab with the 5.3l V-8Helpful (7)
