Jake: Jake here for American Trucks and today I'm taking a look at the Borla S-Type Single Side Exit Exhaust with the Black Chrome Tip fitting 2019 and newer Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500s with the 5.3 liter V8. If you're on the hunt for a high-quality exhaust system that produces a great sound without a ton of volume for your 2019 and newer Silverado or Sierra with the 5.3, Borla's got you covered here. Now, this is going to appeal to you if you want your truck to make some more noise, but you aren't willing to sacrifice your eardrums or give an inch on quality. Now on our loudness meter, this one is gonna get a three out of five. So, if you're looking for outright volume, again, this probably isn't gonna be your system. However, this is gonna get you that deep V8 rumble and aggressive note, but it just won't be as obtrusive as some other systems.Borla offers different exhaust systems that vary in the type and the volume of sound, and what we have here today is sort of the middle child, the S-Type. Now, as you heard from the clips at the start of the video, this one sounds really good without being too obnoxious. Still has that characteristic Chevy small block V8 noise, but it's not gonna get people shaking their fists at you as you drive by. Now, inside the cab, you're gonna get some additional volume as well, but much like on the outside, it's not gonna be that terribly bad. Definitely noticeable, but it doesn't produce so much volume that you won't be able to hold a conversation or listen to music, and your passengers likely won't complain much either. It's a really good balance that's gonna allow you to enjoy that new exhaust without feeling overwhelmed by it.And that is because Borla takes great care to make their exhaust in such a way that there is no drone at any speed in any gear or at any RPM. They use something they call polyphonic harmonizing technology. It sounds like some kind of weird made-up buzzword, but that's exactly the point. This gives you no buzz. Now, this is essentially the same type of science that goes into tuning pipe organs. They use different lengths of pipe to control different frequencies, thus eliminating obtrusive or dissonant sounds. So, in this system, they're inside of the muffler here, which you can hopefully see. Those four little pipes right in there, that's what we're talking about. So, again, that means that you're not gonna get that annoying droning noise when you're cruising along like you might with a less expensive or less well-made system. And that is the most important point in my eyes. Now, I can speak from experience with this one because I've got an older version of the S-Type on my older truck which also has a 5.3, and these only get better with time. Now, mine sounds pretty good. Again, there is no drone, so all that stuff that Borla talks about with this, absolutely true. Now, finishing the whole thing off is this big four-inch black chrome tip. This adds a nice visual update, but it's one that's a little bit more on the subtle side of the spectrum as again, this is still a single-side exit exhaust. So, this is gonna exit in the factory location on the passenger side behind your rear wheel. Now, the eagle-eyed enthusiast may spot the tip first, but the real tip-off is gonna be when you fire the truck up because you're gonna hear it before you notice it.Now, as far as construction goes, again, this is a really high-quality system as it is with all of Borla's stuff. They make their exhaust out of T304 stainless steel, so you're gonna get excellent corrosion and rust resistance here. As you can see, it just looks really nice too. It's almost a shame that you won't see most of it once it's on the truck. Now, the piping here is all three-inch mandrel bent tubing, so there's no wrinkles, no creases, or anything weird in the metal so all that exhaust gas is gonna flow nice and smoothly through the muffler out of that tip, and allows your engine to breathe much better than the stock system. And of course, you've got that four-inch black chrome tip to finish it off just like we were talking about a few moments ago.And that gives us a nice segue to talk about the price. Now, as with any Borla or other exhaust system of this level of quality, this one doesn't come cheap. It's gonna run you about $1,300, which does put it toward the upper end of the category as far as pricing goes, though it's not quite as spendy as some out there. Overall, I do think this one represents a really good value for your money. You're getting a really high-quality system with solid construction, good features, and a great sound. Now you get what you pay for in most cases when it comes to modifications. So, in my opinion, it's worth spending a bit more on something like this Borla, especially if you want to avoid that drone we were talking about earlier, or if your truck serves as your daily driver. In my eyes, it's definitely worth it.You also tend to get what you pay for when it comes to installation. This one is gonna get a two out of three on our difficulty meter, and it is certainly a job that you can accomplish at home. You should budget about two hours to get everything wrapped up too. Now, the kit overall is pretty inclusive, comes with all the clamps and everything that you need and it does utilize your factory exhaust hanger locations. However, if your Silverado is a crew cab with the 6.5-foot bed, you are gonna need an additional adapter that Borla makes, and we do have that available on our website as well. Otherwise again, bolted installation, no cutting required, and again, it's gonna utilize all those factory exhaust hangers. Not much more we can say about it here. So, with that, let's head over to the install bay and we'll show you how to get this installed on your truck.Man: Tools you will need for this install are an impact, 13 and 15-millimeter sockets, a hanger removal tool, and some lubricant. What's up guys? Today we're gonna be installing a new exhaust on our Silverado, so let's get started. So, now that we've got our truck up in the air, the first thing we're gonna do is come to our ball flare flange here and go ahead and remove that clamp using our 13-millimeter socket on our impact. So, now that we have that loose, we're gonna go ahead and keep it onto our factory Y-pipe here. Next, we can go ahead and start removing our hangers from our isolators. Now it is a good idea to go ahead and spray some lubricant up in your hanger isolators because they do tend to stick and seize over time. So, we're gonna grab our hanger removal tool and go ahead and pry those off. So, if you're doing this on the ground, you definitely want to have some jack stands. Obviously, we're on a lift so we have our pole jack underneath supporting our muffler. So, we can go ahead and remove our rear hanger from its isolator so we have more wiggle room for our double isolator up in the mid-section there. So, again, good to lubricate your hangers and isolators before you remove them. So, now we can go ahead and remove our two middle hangers from their isolators. And while you're doing that, you want to again make sure you have the front part of your system and your muffler supported and maybe even have a second set of hands on the backside or go ahead and support that while we remove those. So, now I can go ahead and lower my pole jack and go ahead and get ready to push the system backward so we can get the mid-pipe back from the crossmember and then go ahead and fish it out down into the front. So, now that we have our exhaust back behind our crossmember and our mid-pipe is dropped out below it, we've gone ahead and grabbed a second set of hands just for safety, and we're gonna go ahead and fish over the axle and down into the front. So, now we're ready to go ahead and put our new system in place. And to do that, we're gonna start with our mid-pipe and we're gonna slide that over our crossmember here, line it up with our Y-pipe, and install our hanger into our isolator. So, now we have our hanger into our isolator and we're gonna reuse the factory clamp for our ball flare flange and use our 13-millimeter socket on our impact to go ahead and snug that down. We're not gonna fully tighten it just yet. So, now we're ready to install our muffler. We have our pole jack in place to support it. First, we're gonna slide our clamp onto our mid-pipe, just to make sure we don't forget that when we install our muffler. And your expansion joint side goes on the mid-pipe. You can go ahead and slide that on until it bottoms out. And again, we're just gonna snug down our clamp using our 15-millimeter socket and our impact. We're not gonna fully tighten it yet, just to make sure we have any adjustments made before we go ahead and snug it down. Now we can go ahead and install our over-axle section, and again, we're gonna slide our clamp onto our muffler and go ahead and fish your over-axle over top here. You can go ahead and slide that in. And then we can line up our two isolators. May need to adjust your height here with your pull jack or jack's hands.Go ahead and get your first one in place, and then we'll install the other one. Now we can go ahead and snug down our clamp using our 15-millimeter socket and our impact. We can go ahead and install our tail section with our tip. And once more, slide your clamp on, go ahead and slide it into place, and then go ahead and install your hanger into your isolator. And then we can go ahead and snug down our clamp using our 15-millimeter socket and impact. So, now once you have your system in place, we can go ahead and double-check our fitment, make sure nothing's gonna hit or rub because you don't want any rattles going down the road. Make sure everything lines up as it should, and then we'll go ahead and do our final tightening down on our three clamps and then our factory clamp up at our ball flare flange using our 13-millimeter socket and impact for that and 15-millimeter socket and impact for the other three. All righty guys, that about wraps up our review and install of our Borla S-Type Single Exhaust System with Black Chrome Tip and Side Exit for your '19 to '23 Silverado 1500. Thanks for watching, and as always, for everything Silverado, keep it right here at americantrucks.com.
