Types of Truck Tires

To determine which tire is best for your F150, you first need to decide which type of tire you should run. Dedicated mud tires have deep tread and lugs on part of the sidewall for better grip on rocks when aired down. On-road, these tires are noisy to the point of being obnoxious. They also have a noticeable reduction in gas mileage. If your F150 mostly sees off-road job sites and camping trips, a set of mud tires will keep you from getting stuck. All-terrain tires are a balance between street and mud tires. They’ll have deeper tread than street designs but can also have side lugs. You won’t want to air down these tires too often as they’re not structurally built for as much stress as mud tires. If you’re an F150 owner who does some occasional off-roading, but sticks to the street 60% of the time, all-terrain is your best tire. If you don’t plan on off-roading at all, stick to the standard street tires.

What Tire Size Means for Your F150

If you’re after an aggressive stance, a lift kit and taller tires are in order. Most lift kits will tell you the best tire size for the lift height. Keep in mind taller tires will affect your speedometer’s accuracy. You’ll need to use a tuner or math to correct for the changes. Another caveat is altering the side wall ratios will affect ride quality. While lifting your F150, be sure do maintain the thick side walls to maximize trail capabilities.
