The Purpose of F150 Running Boards

Running boards, also called side steps, provide a unique look to you truck, but also serve a functional purpose. Much like the nickname states, running boards make it easier to get in and out of your truck. Lifted trucks especially can be irritating to enter on a daily basis without assistance. If you take your kids around in your F150, running boards are a perfect way to ensure they can get in and out without falling. On a more minor level, running boards serve as a barrier between your truck and any hazards whether in a parking lot or on a trail. Most running boards are designed for light impacts (like a shopping cart or car door) not harsh collisions (like sliding into a boulder while on the trail). While they might take the brunt of a bad impact, they won’t look the same afterwards.

The Different Types of F150 Running Boards

The major difference in running boards is the actual step. The board portion is steel, either a flat portion or just tubing. The flat boards tend to have cut outs with lifted edges to provide traction in slushy and muddy environments. Scraping your boot along these cut outs will also help prevent tracking muck into the cabin. Tubular running boards have rubber steps pads (one per door), varying in length. Other running boards are steel bars with steel drop steps similar in style to the flat boards. When looking around for the best running board for your F150, be sure to consider cab length. Running boards take into account whether your truck is a standard cab, crew cab, etc.
