The Wilwood Tactical Xtreme front brake setup in red would be an awesome choice for the 2010 and newer truck owners out there looking to step up into a legitimate big brake kit for right around that $2,000 price point. Now, besides offering a sizable upgrade in hardware and stopping power, truck owners can also enjoy a little visual improvement behind your favorite set of 20-inch wheels or larger, thanks to the two-piece rotor design and burly six-piston calipers shown here in red. Now, traditionally, of course, brake installs are a walk in the park for most truck owners out there, however, this kit does involve some safety wire work which, if you're not familiar with that, can be a bit of a pain in the you know what. So, because of that, we are gonna kick this one up to a full three out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter and a few hours to complete from start to finish. So, Wilwood does make up one-third of my holy brake trinity, as I like to call it here on the site, the other two being, of course, Brembo and also Baer. Now, all three companies are gonna produce some killer components when looking to stop a little bit quicker and all three are certainly going to look a lot better than the factory stuff that you are replacing. And with that said, let's be completely honest here, guys, I'm willing to bet a good portion of truck owners out there who are genuinely interested in this kit are gonna be so for the aesthetic factor in addition to providing you with a solid bump in stopping power. And there's really nothing wrong with that as it's your truck, you can mod it however you like. But on the other hand, guys, if you are looking at the Wilwood Tactical Xtreme kit here for its sole purpose of pulling that big heavy truck down from speed a little bit more effectively, especially if you're doing some towing or have some big heavy wheel and tire upgrades installed, then hang out with me for a bit, guys, and let's break this kid down a little bit further. So, Wilwood actually develop the Tactical Xtreme TX6R front kit that we have here specifically for the truck, SUV, and armored vehicle market. And when designing this kit, they did so with extreme durability in line of course but also sustain high heat capabilities because, let's be honest, that's what you're mainly going to be concerned about when you're looking to get these big heavy trucks to stop not only quickly but also more consistently. In fact, they specifically engineered this kit to handle the stopping duties on trucks weighing up to about 14,000 pounds. So, obviously, a far cry from your run of the mill F-150, but good to know again for the guys out there who do a lot of heaving towing. Now the TX6R kit that we have here, guys, is gonna feature two big stars, in my opinion, the first of which are these massive two-piece 15-inch GT 60 curved in rotors, the second big star is no doubt these beautiful massive radial mount six piston calipers again, done up in red. Now, interestingly enough here, guys, the rotor material does feature a proprietary iron alloy material which is more carried over from the tech used in Wilwood's extreme duty military stuff. So, they don't just rebrand a kit from a Mustang or something like that and call it a day, they built this kit specifically with truck use in mind. Now, that two-piece rotor design is gonna be a lot lighter compared to your traditional one-piece cast-iron rotor. And another big draw with a two-piece design like this is that it will be crucial in helping heat dissipation, preventing all that excess heat from the brake and friction surface from transferring to the hubs and, more specifically, the wheel bearings on your rig. Now, that's due largely in part to the aluminum center section, here again, preventing a ton of heat from reaching that hub that we just mentioned, of course, but at the same time, it's also gonna help prevent or at least reduce some rotational mass in the process. And then you have these massive six-piston calipers providing you with a ton of clamping force, no doubt, in addition to just a very stout and strong build. Forged aluminum housing here, loaded with stainless steel pistons. Finally, high temp internal seals and everything is gonna be finished off in this gloss red powder coat as you can see. Looks really, really sharp when installed. But just a quick heads up, guys, if you want something a little less flashy per se, Wilwood is gonna make this same exact kit but offer the calipers done up in black if that's the look you're after instead. But aside from the big old two-piece rotors, flashy calipers, Wilwood also throws in some braided stainless steel lines for you guys here as you can see, and more importantly, their really, really capable BP-20 pad. Now this pad is gonna be a little bit more aggressive than their basic street pad, which is called their BP-10, gonna have a wider temp range, which again is really good for those heavier trucks doing a lot of towing. Now, it is important to point out, guys, in order to get these massive brakes from Wilwood onto your truck, you will need to run at least a 20-inch wheel or larger with this particular kit. For a lot of the big brake kits that is gonna be pretty much par for the course with the exception of an Alcon, for instance, where you can get away with a 17, but for the most part, if you want to go big with hardware, you have to increase your wheel diameter. Now, if you have a smaller wheel currently on your truck, you really don't want to get rid of those but you still are looking to make an upgrade to your braking capabilities, I would recommend checking out an aftermarket rotor and pad combo that utilize a factory size rotor but with even more aggressive pad as that will be your best bet without having to upgrade your wheels in the process.Switching gears, let's talk about the installation briefly here, guys, and again, we did kick this up to a full three out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter, not because brakes are tough per se but because again, there is some safety wiring involved in order to get your hat mounted and secured to the actual rotor itself. Now, safety wiring isn't brain surgery per se but it's also a little bit tricky if you've never done it, so give yourself a few hours from start to finish to get everything tackled in addition to bleeding the brakes once the install has been wrapped up.So, wrapping things up, guys, if you're looking for a very baller, big brake upgrade for that tow rig or daily driver and you already have a set of 20-inch wheels or larger, you might want to consider checking out the Wilwood TX6R kit right here at americantrucks.com.
