Simple installation for anyone.
Hey, guys. Adam here with americantrucks.com. And today, we're taking a closer look at and installing the Truxedo TruXport Soft Roll-up Tonneau Cover, available for the '09 to '18 Ram 1500 without the Ram box. You should be checking out this tonneau cover if you're looking for a budget-friendly and secure way to keep your cargo safe from some potential thieves as well as keeping it safe from all-weather elements. Now a soft roll-up tonneau cover is one of the most budget-friendly and traditional style tonneau covers in the category which does help keep the price down. It is really budget-friendly, right around 300 bucks for this one we have here and it does have a very easy to use latching system. Now before we get to the latching system, let's talk about all the materials built-in. Now this guy has a leather-grained vinyl canvas material right on top that uses Velcro to stretch over the sides and snap right into your new bed rails. The bed rails seat right on top of your factory bed rails and use weatherstripping underneath of it to make sure no water or any of the elements can leak its way under wetting your cargo. So that's a good thing to keep in mind. It also has a weatherstrip seal right across the front that'll seal into the inside of your tailgate to do the same thing. And then finally, the same happens on your bulkhead. So all the way around, really good protection from the elements. This leather grained vinyl also takes a really good beating from the elements, rain, snow, sleet, or hail all-year-round regardless of where you're at. We're located here on the East Coast, so we do see a lot of snowfall and there's winter months and that even the weight of that piled up here can be withheld using this tonneau cover. Now it uses aluminum slats that run across a couple of sections throughout the roll-up tonneau cover, which is gonna give it some of that added support and durability. Now this does have a matte black finish to it and because it seats upward on those bed rails, it's not exactly the lowest profile or a low pro look. Some of the other ones out there do have a lower profile, this one sticks up a bit, about two, maybe two and a half inches, which isn't my favorite feature, but again, it is really budget-friendly and still very effective. As far as the latching system, when you drop your tailgate on both sides right underneath there's a little knob that you just click down, click it down on one side, click it down in the other and it pops loose. From there you can roll it all the way back to underneath of your rear windshield. Now from there, there are two straps already built into the tonneau cover construction that allow you to strap it back so you can drive with it completely open or latch it all the way shut and drive with it completely shut. Now one of the downsides of a soft roll-up tonneau cover is that it's either open or closed, there really is no in-between, which if you really want access to sections of your bed, you may want to look at a trifold or even a quad fold tonneau cover. Again, this is more for the guys out there who just want simple protection for their cargo, maybe using their truck as a grocery getter or daily driver, not so much for lumber or things like that.If you are leaving expensive cargo inside your truck bed overnight or at all times, maybe it's a work truck, you might want to look into something that maybe has a little bit more of a theft prevention feature. The soft roll-up can easily be knifed into which is something to keep in mind but you also just want to be about what you're leaving in there and depending obviously on your area. Now this kit from Truxedo does include pre-installed and preset tension springs, which already hold the tension on the tonneau cover properly right out of the box so you don't have to mess with that but it can be adjusted depending on your climate. This guy again is coming in right around 300 bucks. Install, one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. It is one of the easiest tonneau covers to install. You can do it in about 30 minutes from start to finish, and you can do it all by yourself. You're gonna need very simple hand tools. I'm gonna show you every single step of the way. What do you say we get started? All right. Tools in this install include an impact gun or ratchet, 13-millimeter socket, and wire cutters or scissors or something similar. First up here, we're gonna start already in our bed. We're gonna take the weatherstripping included in the kit, this is going to get lined up right across the top of your bulkhead which is this portion right under your rear windshield. So grab this guy and we're gonna unroll it, and the bottom of it is sticky. So that's the portion that we're gonna stick down right across the top. Run that right across the middle from one end to the other. Now you're not going over top of the bed caps here, you're just gonna stick to the inside, so get it all the way to this edge and then cut off the excess. I'm using wire cutters but scissors work just as well. All right, so once you have that tucked in, you can set this stuff aside and then you're basically just gonna peel off the white backing on top. From here, just put pressure all around to make sure it sticks and then we're good to move on.Next step, grab your tonneau cover. And in the box it is rolled up just like this, you can pretty much leave it just as it is right out of the box and put it right on top of that bolt kit. So we're gonna put it in position the way it's going to be unrolling. So this plastic portion here that has weatherstripping on it is gonna be up against the weatherstripping we just installed. Just like that. All right, so now we're gonna leave that there, grab our side bed rails and snap it into each side. All right, next step what we're gonna be doing here is installing our bed rail. Now the bed rail is labeled P on each of the end caps. One is P for passenger, the other one will say D for driver. We're gonna put our passenger side up onto our bed rail. Now you can see this little notch here at the end of it, that is gonna slot into the notch on the bulkhead portion of your tonneau cover. You may need to lift up on the fabric a little bit to expose all of it, line that up, and they slide right in. Do the same thing on the other side. All right, so now what we're doing is taking the foam padding included in the kit, this is another piece of weatherstrip sealant that's gonna go right on this end cap where these two pieces connect, this little triangular section. What I'm gonna do is peel off one of the ones that have this curved corner, also has 3M on the back of it. From here gonna lift up, line it up into place here. It fits perfectly right around that corner, just stick it in and seat it down. We're gonna repeat that on the other side. All right, so now we have our bed rails in place, you want to make sure that the lip here is completely flush up against the lip or the end here of your bed cap. Make sure that goes all the way to your tailgate, and then from there, we're gonna install our clamps. Now there's gonna be three on each bed rail, so we're gonna start here about 10 inches away from the bulkhead here. We're gonna loosen up the clamp enough that this portion, this big square block can hook underneath and the top can go up above. Now there's teeth all along the inside slot here, so the teeth on your clamp will line up to those. Connect them, grab a 13 socket and tighten it down. All right, we're gonna repeat that two more times and then on the other side. All right, so then we're gonna repeat that right about the center of your bed, hook that guy around. Now again, you may need to loosen up that bolt to get it to open up. Line it up to the teeth, hold it in place, clamp it down. All right, last but not least, this clamp here is gonna go a little bit closer to the tailgate just behind your tension spring, hook that guy around and clamp it down. All right, so now we're doing the exact same thing on our driver side. All right, with everything clamped down, now we can unroll our tonneau cover, test it out, make sure everything lines up properly, and then we'll finish up clamping it at the tailgate. So we're just gonna unhook these retainer straps. As we roll, I'm gonna start pulling a little bit of tension on the tonneau cover, so making sure that the Velcro here lines up with the Velcro strip on the bed rails. It's looking good so far. Now before we latch it, we're gonna put weatherstrip seals on these little end caps here, and then we'll click it shut. Now for these little plastic caps, we're going back to this little foam padding here. Take one of these guys off, line that up to this little triangular section and press down. Repeat that on the other side. All right, so at this point we have those in place, let's close our tonneau cover. So we're gonna latch this in right around those hooks. Press down and it clicks and shut our tailgate and we're good to go.So that's gonna wrap up my review and install for the Truxedo TruXport Soft Roll-up Tonneau Cover, available for the '09 to '18 Ram 1500.
