Jake here for American Trucks and today, I'm taking a look at the Bilstein B8 5100 Series Rear Shock for 0 to 2" Lifts fitting 2007 to 2018 Silverado 1500s. Upgrading your shocks is an excellent way to improve both the ride and handling characteristics of your truck and the B8 5100 from Bilstein can make a huge difference in how your truck performs. Whether you're at a stock right height or running up to a 2-inch lift, this is gonna make a huge difference for an affordable price. Now, I try not to mince words when it comes to suspension modifications because they are so important. When it comes to getting some kind of lift or level on your truck, yes, we all want that look, but it should ride well too. And nobody does ride and handling better than Bilstein. Now, I've had Bilstein's on several of my own vehicles, including a set of these B8 5100s, and I gotta tell you, they never failed to impress. Now, this shock itself is set up for a stock right-height truck or one that has up to a 2-inch lift on it. Now, if you're gonna have that kind of variance, you're gonna have to have something with the damping and the travel to match, otherwise, the ride is gonna be severely compromised. But of course, Bilstein's got you covered here. The B8 5100 features dig aggressive valving technology, and that allows the shock to instantly react to impacts and varying road surfaces. So, inside this shock body, there are velocity-sensitive digressive floating pistons, and they allow for more variability in rebound, compression, and in overall travel. And all that is just gonna add up to more control on the street or trail. Now, despite these being nonadjustable monotube shocks, ones that don't have remote reservoirs, as you can see, the damping is excellent and you can absolutely feel the difference in body control versus stop. Now, it's not gonna ruin the ride quality by any means. In fact, it stays pretty much the same when you get these on. It's just a bit more firm and again, more controlled. It's a shock that really doesn't compromise in any way, and that's what I like about them so much. Now, construction as is the usual with Bilstein's offerings is excellent too. You get a 46-millimeter diameter shock body and this is zinc-plated for durability and good looks. You also have this gator that is already attached when you pull it out of the box and behind that, you've got chromed and hardened piston rods and that velocity-sensitive digressive floating piston we were talking about a moment ago. You also get new OEM-grade bushings at the top and bottom mounting points. So, when you put this on, it's gonna be a nice refresh in all aspects. Now, Bilstein also backs this up with a lifetime warranty against defects, and I can tell you from experience that they are really good about honoring that.Pricing is going to come in at about $150 per shock. And as you've no doubt noticed by now, I've only got one of these up here on the table and that is because they are sold separately. So, make sure you make that quantity two when you go to buy them since you absolutely want to do these in pairs. Now, that $150 price point does put these in about the middle of the range price-wise for rear shocks, but that does seem to be about right.Since, again, you aren't getting things like the adjustable damping or remote reservoir, you are saving a bit on cost. But these are still gonna provide excellent damping, great body control, and the ability to work with a lift or a leveling kit too. If you're shopping for shocks and you aren't looking to lift your truck all the way up to the sky, you really cannot go wrong with these. Now, there is also a matching front shock of this same B8 5100 series available, and that one even allows you to level out the front end of your truck. I would highly recommend doing these all together. Having a match set front and rear is gonna make a huge improvement in how your truck drives.Installation is gonna get a one out of three on our difficulty meter and it should only take you about one hour per shock. Now, since the rear end of this gen of Silverado is a leaf spring, all you're gonna need to do is unbolt your stock shock absorber and then bolt this one in its place and repeat it on the other side. Aside from taking off the wheel and jacking the truck up, maybe getting another jack under the axle to make sure everything is supported, it's really just a two-bolt job here. It's pretty straightforward, definitely something you can accomplish at home. And to show you that process now, let's head on over to the install bay. Tools needed for this install are an impact gun, a 21-millimeter socket, a 21-millimeter open-ended wrench, a torque wrench, and some penetrating lubricant.Hey, everybody. Today, we're gonna be showing you how to install this Bilstein B8 5100 Series Shock. We're gonna be doing it on our 2014 Silverado. Now, before we get to installing, obviously we're gonna have to uninstall our stalk shock absorber back here. And you may have already noticed too that we have gone ahead and removed our spare tire from the truck. Now, you do not have to do this on your truck, but we are doing it mostly for the ease of space adjustments and being able to see what we're doing up here. Makes it easier when we put it on camera. So, with that, let's go ahead and show you how to uninstall the stalk shock absorber. All right. Before we go ahead and start taking anything off or even really getting into this uninstall process, the first thing I want to do is spray the bolts on the shock with some penetrating lubricant. Now, you can use whatever you like. We've got some B'Laster right here. I'm gonna go ahead and just spray these down a little bit. Now, I've been soaking these for a little while just because I know I'm gonna be in here and you might wanna do that as well. I recommend doing it a day or two before. Also recommend putting on some kind of rubber or latex glove here because if you're wearing regular mechanics gloves, it's gonna smell like lubricant after you're done. All right. Next thing we're gonna do is support the rear axle. Since when we take this off, especially when we undo this bolt, rear axle is gonna shift a little bit. So, I've got a transmission jack here. I'm just gonna go ahead right next to where the shock bolts to the bottom of the axle. Give this a little bit of support, you can see that moving. Now, if you don't have a transmission jack or you're not working on a lift, you can use a regular floor jack, can either go here on the axle or even on the differential itself. Just make sure you've got enough room to get your gun or your wrench on here for this bolt. All right. Next, we're gonna go ahead and undo this bottom bolt. So, I've got my 21-millimeter socket on my impact gun here. That's gonna go on the bolt side. And on the nut side, I've got a 21-millimeter wrench. I'm just gonna go on right there and hold that as I loosen it. All right. Once you've got the nut out, just go ahead and back this guy right on out. And again, this is gonna drop a little bit, so that's why it's important to have this jack here. All right. Next, we're gonna go ahead and undo the top bolt up here. Again, this is the same 21-millimeter socket. I'm just gonna put my gun on it. I'm gonna hold onto the shock because once this bolt comes out, the shock is gonna be free. Now, you may have noticed I didn't put a wrench on this, and that's because on the back here, this is captive so there is no nut on the other side. So, once we drop that down, our gun down, and this'll just come free. All right. Now we're gonna go ahead and install the new Bilstein in the truck. Now, one thing to keep in mind, Bilstein says it themselves, always install the shock with the label facing up. So, if you install it with the label facing upside down, it's incorrect. Make sure the label is facing up. We're gonna go ahead and put the shock in, again, label facing up. Just slide that back in to the original bracket up there. And using your rear hand bolt, go ahead and bolt this in. May have to wiggle it around a little bit, get things where they need to be. I'm gonna start this by hand and we're gonna leave this loose because we need some adjustment here in order to get the bottom bolt in. And then we're gonna come back and torque this as well. So, once you've got that most of the way in, you can leave that there and we're gonna go ahead and do the bottom bolt. All right. Next, we're gonna go ahead and do the bottom bolt. So, with the shock hanging like this, we're gonna go ahead and get this in line. Now, this is the other part where having the jack comes in handy because you can lower this just enough to get things where you need it. Now, you may have to get a little pressure on the shock itself to get that where it needs to be. So, I'm gonna go ahead and take my bolt. Again, bolts coming from this side. Push the shock up a little bit, get that fed through all the way there. We're gonna get the nut on the other side. Just get that tightened down, just like that, and we're gonna go ahead and torque it.All right. Next, we're gonna go ahead and tighten up our lower bolt. We're gonna torque this to spec. Spec for these both top and bottom are 85 pound-feet. So, I'm gonna get my wrench on here, just gonna go ahead and tighten this down until I get a nice click. There we go. Then we'll go ahead and torque the top one. All right. Now, we'll go ahead and torque the top bolt. Again, this is also gonna be 85 foot-pounds. There we are. That's gonna wrap it up here for our review and install of the Bilstein B8 5100 Series Rear Shock for 0 to 2" Lifts fitting 2007 to 2018 Silverado 1500s. Thanks so much for watching and remember, for all things Silverado, be sure to keep it right here at americantrucks.com.
