      Video Review & Installation

Hey, guys. Adam here with americantrucks.com. Today we're taking a closer look at and installing the Westin HDX Drop Nerf Side Steps in the Textured Black Finish for 2009 to 2018 Ram 1500s both Quad Cab and Crew Cab models. You should be checking this out if you're looking to get safely in and out of your vehicle with an aftermarket side step, something that is a little bit different than your traditional step ranging from 150 to 200 bucks. This one, in my opinion, is a little bit more aggressive, it's a whole lot more durable and it's definitely a lot more capable. Now this one, in particular, does have a textured powder coated finish on top for corrosion and rust resistance and it is an entire one-piece steel construction. With that in mind, this is again a little bit more unique than your traditional side step. It's more of a combination of a nerf step and a drop step, very unique to the Westin and HDX styling. Now what I mean by it's a nerf and drop step combination is, drop steps are typically this one-step piece by itself, bolted up to the frame and nerf steps are typically this long bar all one-piece constructed with the side steps attached. So it's kinda got that two in one look, that two in one styling. It has that one piece, kind of hexagonal shape, but it also has drop steps welded to it for the one-piece design. The steps, by the way, are a patented design to Westin, that HDX styling. It's gotten punched holes all along for grip. It is removable with these hex bolts bolted to it. So if you wanted to pull them off and clean underneath and pop it right back on, you can do so and they're strategically placed right under each of the doors especially for our crew cab model here. Now this one is coming in at right around 400 bucks, a little bit more expensive than the traditional, more budget-friendly options out there but again, you're paying a little more for the styling and for the rugged durability. We're gonna give this install one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. You can tackle it in about an hour in the driveway at home. And it's gonna take very simple hand tools, a ratchet or impact gun, 10-millimeter wrench, 13 and 15-millimeter sockets. And I'm gonna show you guys the driver side install. Just know it's pretty much the exact same thing for the passenger side, so just rinse and repeat, but we're gonna focus on this side here with our '14 Ram. What do you say we get started? Tools used in this install include an impact gun or a ratchet, 13 and 16-millimeter deep sockets, 5/32 hex socket and a 10-millimeter wrench. Now the first step here starting on our driver's side is to locate the first position for our bracket. Now on the driver's side, it is a little bit unique. We're gonna be using the pinch weld holes as well as these two right here with our uniquely shaped bracket. Now, pretty much all the brackets are the same with the exception of this one. Now because our frame does not have threaded holes, we're gonna be using riv-certs, these small pieces of hardware included in the kit, these are just gonna seat right in these hex holes. Now we're gonna take our bracket, this uniquely shaped one, make sure you're pointing it out toward the outside of the vehicle. Just hold it into place, grab your longer M8 hex bolts with a flat and lock washer and just thread those in by hand. And because it does have some play left to right, you just want to make sure they're lined up with the holes in the pinch weld before going all the way down. Grab a 13-millimeter socket and tighten those down. Now for the next step, we're gonna grab our 5/32 hex bolt along with the flat washer, we're gonna go through the front end of the holes in our pinch weld. Now there's a 10-millimeter nut that goes on the back end. You want make sure you're putting it through the front because this is what you'll see from the outside of the vehicle and the bolt heads are just gonna be a little bit more attractive than the nuts, in my opinion, so we're gonna put those through by hand and then we'll just tighten them down. Grab a 10-millimeter wrench and your 5/32 hex socket and give them a quick tight down. Now we can move on to the next bracket. All right, now that we're in the center location for our mounting bracket, we're gonna take our hex bolt plate and insert that into the larger hole on our frame. Now as you can see at the other end here, there is a threaded hole, that's just gonna line up with this hole right here. Before we can do anything else, because this is not threaded, we're gonna put one of our riv-certs in again. Next, grab your bracket, insert the stud over that hole. And you want to use that stud to pull the bolt plate into position on that left-hand side. Grab an M-8 bolt and thread that into the bolt plate nut. For the stud up top, you're gonna take a flat washer, split washer, and your 15-millimeter nut, we're gonna tighten that down. Again, you want to make sure this is pretty much lined up with the first bracket that you installed. If you need to make adjustments, now is the time to do so, just make sure it's straight. Now for the bottom two, take a 13-millimeter socket and tighten them down and the top will be a 15. There we go.Now for the third and final one on our driver side, we're basically doing the exact same thing, we're gonna insert the bolt plate, line that up. Grabbed our riv-cert, insert that. Racket next. Grab an M8 bolt with your split washer and your flat washer. All right, and then the stud is gonna get the same thing, I'm gonna put a split washer and a flat washer. All right, grab your 15 socket for the stud and your 13 socket for the smaller bolt heads. Next step, you wanna grab your driver side side step and basically put it into place on your three brackets. Now if you have a helping hand, it goes a long way, someone can hold it from the outside while you bolt it from the inside. If you're working alone like I am, you can actually just prop it up onto the brackets and it will slightly hold itself in place. You do want to be careful, you don't want it to fall off on top of you because it can be a little painful. So once you prop it up, just keep your hand on it, crawl underneath, bolt it up from the underside, and we'll be good to go. You're gonna use those M8 short bolts that we used earlier for the brackets. There's two going to attach it to each bracket. So there's six bolts in total, so we're gonna grab those along with our split washer and flat washer and we'll bolt it down with our 13-millimeter socket. All right, so we're basically gonna prop it up here, crawl right underneath, hold it in place and bolt it up. All right, once you have your side step in place, grab your M8 bolts, the short bolts along with the split and flat washer. We're gonna tighten them down by hand. As you can see, I already have one in place just to hold the side step, tighten that down by hand, move on to the other brackets, and then tighten them all down with your 13 socket. So from here, we're gonna move on. All right, now we're at the center bracket doing the exact same thing. We'll pull the side step close, tighten these down by hand. All right, once you have the bolts threaded in by hand, grab your 13 socket and tighten them down. Now repeat this for all of the brackets. Well, guys, that's going to wrap up my quick review and install for the Westin HDX Drop Nerf Side Steps available in the Textured Black Finish for 2009 to 2018 Ram 1500s, you can pick your set up right here at americantrucks.com.
