What's going on, guys? Adam here with americantrucks.com. And today we're taking a closer look at, installing and testing out the UnderCover Elite Hinged Tonneau Cover, available for the 2019 Ram 1500. You should be checking this out for your brand new Ram if you're in the market for a tonneau cover, one of the most popular parts for trucks, but one that is, in particular, a completely hardcover shell that protects the entire bed from every weather element possible as well as theft. Now this particular style of tonneau cover typically falls at the premium end of a tonneau cover spectrum as far as pricing and quality goes because it does cover every aspect of the bed and is one of the most protective options out there. Now because it is a hard shell that operates on a hinge and goes upward just like this at an angle. Now of course, every tonneau cover has its pros and cons but this guy being that hard shell overlaps both sides of the bed as well as the tailgate, so no weather can get into it no matter what, really. Now it has weatherstripping along the inside and it's more of a dual-layer weatherstripping that I really like. It overlaps the bed rails on both sides as well as that tailgate and it has a really thick weatherstripping going against the bulkhead. As far as that protection goes, it's made of an impact-resistant scratch-resistant, fade-resistant, UV-resistant ABS-plastic. It's also got that textured black finish so when you rub your hand against it you can see it's got that little bit of texture to it, which I think adds to the styling. Now being that it's an ABS, you cannot knife through it like you would a soft roll-up, so that's a huge benefit with a shell-like this one. Now it also has a locking mechanism. You'll shut your tailgate first and the tonneau cover will overlap that just give it a twist and it locks into place so you can drive with it closed. In my hand is also one of the two keys included in the kit, you just pop the cover off of that locking mechanism, give it a twist and it's locked. You cannot break into this guy if you wanted to, it is very, very secure. If you're worried about leaving any of your valuable cargo in the bed, you can just lock this guy and have peace of mind. So that's something you'd definitely look forward to in a hinge style that you don't typically get with a traditional style tonneau cover. I know there are locking options out there that are not hinged and a full shell like this one but they are typically around the same price tag as far as premium quality goes. Now, of course, every tonneau cover has its pros and cons, right? A soft roll-up can easily be knifed into, this one doesn't have that con to worry about but because it is an overall hinge tonneau, it opens at that angle. It's not a bed that you can stand in when this is installed. It'll have that little hunch so if you're trying to get something like a big box from all the way at your bulkhead, you have to crawl in there and get a little hunched down to get back there. So that is one of the cons. Another con is that you really have to keep this closed while you're driving. So if you're looking to haul around big cargo, not only will you not have the proper angle and height for it if it's more vertical, but you're also really not supposed to drive with this open because there is no real way to lock it up. So that's something to keep in mind as well. Also, one of the other things is that you're really going to be overlapping the tailgate with this, so when it's closed, you cannot open the tailgate without having to unhinge and open up the tonneau. So just a couple of things to keep in mind. In my opinion, not deal-breakers, but if you're looking for a hinge tonneau cover, you know exactly what you're getting. Those are things that you're already expecting when looking at a hinge tonneau, but it's something to keep in mind nonetheless. This guy does come in right around $1000. Not the most expensive tonneau cover in the category but it is one of the most protective which explains a lot of that price tag. Underneath of the ABS material, you'll find all-aluminum locking mechanisms, something that is very secure and is not popping off. You're also gonna find twin power gas struts that allow it to open slowly and securely without bouncing off the top end of that angle. So that's something I really like about it, they're more progressive. It's also got a strap already attached to it, so at the tailgate when it's all the way open, you can easily reach a strap and pull it closed without having to put forth any real excessive effort to get to reach it. It's also gotten included, and this is more of just a bell and whistle type of deal here, it's also got a hook already included on the underside of the cover, so if you have something small you need to get to at the bulkhead, you can reach up, grab the hook, and it helps you reach stuff at the back end of the bed without having to crawl up in it and get hunched down like I mentioned earlier. Finally, one of the other bells and whistles that comes with this kit is an in-bed light. It's already built into the tonneau cover by the locking mechanism, so when it's open you can hit a button and have a nighttime light shine right into your bed so that you can easily see what's going on at any hour of the night. So that's something that I really like about it as well. Now finally guys, I want to show you how we use this thing and then we're gonna jump into the install, which by the way, it's going to get one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter here. Anybody can tackle it with about 30 minutes from start to finish, although I will say you do need a helping hand to get this installed. One more thing to mention is when it comes to uninstalling it, if you ever want to take it off, it includes wall mount brackets. So if you have a big garage, you want to put this guy in and store it when you don't want it installed on your bed, you can install wall mount hooks onto your wall, just drill them right in. And this guy has pre-drilled holes to hang it up on your wall, so that's really convenient. It reminds me of sort of like a softer hardtop for a Jeep. You can pre-install a bracket in your garage to have it hook up, same thing here, you can hang this right on a wall mount. Now before we get started on the install, we already have it on our truck, I want to quickly show you guys how it works. Now right now we have it closed. It's not locked with the key but it is locked shut so you can drive. So if you want to open it, you'll just twist this mechanism and push up on it. Now really you don't have to put too much effort into it, you push it up and it pretty much does it by itself. If you wanted to close it, you've got this pull string here, pull it, grab this convenient handle and drop it down, twist and you're good to go. If you wanted to lock it, you have a key, open up that cap, twist and you can shut it. So it doesn't really look like it has a locking mechanism in it. And now you can't twist and open it and there's not a whole lot of wiggle room in it.Now one more thing I want to show you underneath, couple of those features that we talked about here. So I want to unlock it here, twist and we're gonna open. Then right here is that hook I mentioned, can go like that. You have a nice convenient hook to use, I'll drop that in the bed for right now. Also up top, bed light, so that's really useful. You can also click it and open it and take it off if you want it to reposition it in your bed. When it's time to close it, make sure your tailgate is closed first, pull that string here and we're back down. So again guys, lots of functionality with it, really easy to use. Let's talk about how we get it on.Tools used in this install include an impact gun or a ratchet, 13-millimeter deep socket and some measuring tape. The first step of the install guys is to get our brackets in place. Now there are specific front and rear brackets, so front being, of course, the front of the bed, rear being the tailgate side, so make sure you're installing them in the appropriate positions. Now the first thing we're gonna do is to install our rear bracket on our passenger side. They are side specific. The rear bracket has our ball stud on one side and the striker bracket on the other side for our lock. Now this portion here, the striker bracket is gonna go on the tailgate side while our ball stud is going to go facing the bulkhead. Now on our passenger side, what we have to do is measure from the bulkhead to the edge of this bracket, the very edge here. On a 2019 Ram with a 5.7 bed we're gonna measure 39-1/4 inches to the edge of this bracket from that bulkhead. Now it is model-specific for measurements. If you don't have a 2019 Ram, you want to refer to the model-specific guide in your kit in the box for the measurements for your truck. So with that said, got my measuring tape here. Gonna measure from the bulkhead right here, 39-1/4 inches to the end of the bracket. All right, so right about there, shuffle it back it a hair. Once you have that set in place, you want to leave it there, grab your clamps and we'll clamp it down.Next up with our clamps, you want to install two clamps per bracket. On our rear bracket by the tailgate, you have three holes. Hole number one is by the stud, hole number two is in the middle and hole number three is by the tailgate. You want to install one of the clamps and hole number one closest to the bulkhead where your stud is and then another clamp as closest to the tailgate as you can go without it being obstructed. Now underneath here you may have things obstructing your final hole, in which case go to the middle. Ours is looking pretty clear so we should be able to use that. But if you can't, use the hole closest to the tailgate that's free. Now the clamp is gonna go through the back. So you're gonna have to take this bolt out here, it's gonna touch the back end of the bed going through this hole, and then the stud or the bolt is gonna go through, so it'll clamp right to the back end of this plastic. You want to make sure the teeth are facing up, hold that in place and do the same thing for the first hole. All right, so teeth of the clamp on the back of the bed, bottom of it on the bracket. All right, so now what we can do is hold this in place, grab a 13 socket and tighten these guys down. And once you have this in place, you want to go back and measure and make sure it's still 39-1/4 inches away from that bulkhead to the edge. 39-1/4, it's looking pretty good. At this point, we're gonna repeat for the other side. Put this guy here, measure 39-1/4. Now for our front brackets, again, there are passenger and driver side, we're doing our passenger side. You want to make sure you're installing this guy from bulkhead to the end closest to your tailgate. You want this end to be 16-1/4 inches away from the bulkhead. So we're just gonna place that guy up there, grab our tape measure, put this guy on the bulkhead, you want that to be 16-1/4 inches away. We're gonna pull this guy down 16-1/4, right about here. So now what we can do is take two of these clamps and install them to clamp it down. Now what you're gonna do again is go hole number one which is now closest to the tailgate and hole number three closest to the bulkhead. So the middle guy is gonna be empty but if there's anything obstructing one of those, use the one closest to the bulkhead. So we're gonna take this bolt out and do the same thing. Start at hole number one. All right, grab your 13 socket and tighten them down. If it shuffles at all or moves when you're tightening it, you want to go back and measure and make sure it's good. All right. Do the same thing on the other side. Now with the help of a friend, you can grab your hinge tonneau cover, we're gonna slide it over, one person on each side. And the hinges already pre-installed on the backside or the underside of your tonneau cover are gonna snap and lock into these little posts on the rear brackets by your bulkhead. And once we snap that in, we'll shuffle it forward and it'll lock into place. From there we can go underneath and tighten them down. But you're going to need the help of a friend. We're going to grab the tonneau cover and click it into place. All right, so now we have to crawl underneath our tonneau with it closed, verify that the locks are in the hinges, they are. Grab this knob that's on a little bit of a spring here, the twist knob, and line it up to the threaded hole on the bracket that we installed on the bed rail. Once it's lined up, you can throw it in and tighten it down all the way and you'll see the hinge start to tighten, just to make sure that that's secure in place. Do that on both sides. All right. So now with the help of a friend, you're gonna be lifting this up, pull your strut off of the bracket. And you're gonna connect to this guy to the stud on your tailgate side. I'm just gonna lift it up high enough, rotate the strut and click it in. Repeat that on the other side.Well, guys, that's gonna wrap up my review, install, and test for the UnderCover Elite Hinged Tonneau Cover, available for the 2019 Ram 1500 and you can get it right here at americantrucks.com
