      Video Review & Installation

Hey, guys. Adam here with americantrucks.com. And today, we're taking a closer look at and installing the Barricade HD Drop Side Step, available for the 2019 and newer Ram 1500, we have it on our CrewCab here but it is available for different trim levels. You should be checking this out for the sides of your Ram if you're looking to beef up the side profile and exterior appearance of your truck, and more importantly, if you're looking to get in and out of your truck safely and securely every time, all year round, regardless of weather. This side step here from Barricade is there HD or heavy-duty side step because it is made of a tubular steel finished in a black textured powder coating. Now the powder coating is gonna help with rust and corrosion resistance since this is a tubular steel and not like some of the other aluminum options. With that in mind, it is gonna be more aggressive, it's gonna be more durable and slightly more protective. When you hear side steps a lot of time these things are advertised as side armor. Side steps typically can help you protect your vehicle from door dings in the parking lot, very small off-road obstacles, but if you're going up against tree logs or any of those bigger rocks, not really gonna be the case, but the tubular steel is a lot more durable and can take more of a beating. Now this guy here is a drop step, meaning that it does hug the vehicle, but the step pads themselves do come down a little bit lower to make it a lot easier on you to get in and out. Now the cool thing about this is not only the angular appearance making it a lot more aggressive and off-road looking but the fact that the steps themselves do have these raised lips in these slots to make sure that you have grip inside of that pad regardless of weather. So rain, snow, sleet, hail, if you're located on the East Coast like we are here, we do see rapid changes in temperature, side steps can get pretty slippery if they don't have the proper protection, and this having that raised lip will grip your boots no matter the weather. Now this one comes in right around the $450 mark, which I personally think is a worthwhile investment. 450 bucks is a little bit more expensive than some of the other entry-level options but given that it is the steel and not aluminum, it has a little bit more of an aggressive appearance, more angular and that black powder-coated finish that goes a long way and I think the price is definitely worthwhile if this is what you're looking for.Install, one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. Anybody can tackle it in the driveway at home with I'd say about an hour from start to finish to knock out both sides because both are included in the kit. No drilling, no cutting, no welding, none of that nonsense, it is a direct bolt-on. I'll show you every single step of the process. What do you say we get started?Tools used in this install include an impact gun, a ratchet, 17-millimeter wrench, 13 and 17-millimeter deep sockets. Now first step for the install, what we're gonna do is crawl underneath and use the brackets that I have set up here on the floor to bolt them down to the preexisting studs under our rocker panel. Now what you're gonna need is a bracket for each position. Doesn't matter which bracket, they are all universal, you're gonna need three washers and three of those nylon lock nuts as well as a 13-millimeter socket, a ratchet, and or an impact gun. So let's head underneath and start at the front of our driver side.First up here we're gonna grab this bracket on the front end of our driver side. As you can see, there are three studs here by the pinch weld. The top is a little more offset to the left. What we're gonna do is take our bracket and as you can see there are three slots. Just line up those studs into their appropriate slots, they really go on only one way. The hook should be facing the outside of the vehicle. From there, what you're gonna do is you're basically gonna take these flat washers and put them over the studs and follow them up with nylon lock nuts. Now one thing you'll notice here on the bracket is that the slots are slotted so you can shuffle it to the left and right a little bit. What I like to try to do is just line it up in the middle, that's a good starting point, if we need to adjust later, we can. All right, and my last note here, you can use an impact gun for most of these studs except for this top one on your driver side. There isn't really enough room to get an impact gun in there, so grab a ratchet, tighten that down with a 13 deep socket. When possible, you can switch over to an impact gun to make life a little easier. Now we can repeat for the second bracket in the middle. All right, so we're basically repeating the same exact thing for this middle section of our pinch weld, only difference is the top stud instead of being offset is in the center, doesn't really make a difference. You're just putting that in the center slot at the top of your bracket instead of the left one. Do the same thing with your washers and the nuts. Now we can move onto the final bracket toward our bed. We're doing exactly the same thing for our final bracket as well.Next step here, we're gonna grab our driver side step and you can determine which one is the driver side by laying it against the vehicle and looking at the center bracket. It is offset but this one is gonna be offset toward the front of the vehicle. If we had the other one here, it'd be toward the rear, that determines driver versus passenger. So from here we're gonna take those brackets, line them up to the brackets we installed on the pinch weld, and then we're gonna bolt them down. There are the 17-millimeter bolts here. What you're gonna need is a 17 deep socket as well as a 17 wrench and we'll tighten them down. As you can see, I'm using a couple of blocks of wood to prop this guy up, I think this starts making life a little bit easier. If you have a helping hand that can hold it in place, that goes a long way as well.So I'm gonna start in the middle bracket to help hold this guy up a little bit better. Now what you're gonna want to do is line this bracket up but you want this bracket to be on the inside facing the rear of the vehicle. You don't want to line it up this way, make sure it's behind the bracket. So we're gonna line this guy up, put the bolt through. When you have those bolts through, you'll take a washer on the backside as well as the nylon lock nut and tighten them down. So we're not gonna tighten them down just yet. Put the bolts through each one of the brackets before going forward. So we're just gonna repeat that for each one of our brackets. All right, once you have this last bolt through here make sure the side steps are flat and aligned where you want them and tighten these down. All right, now you can repeat for the other side. That's gonna wrap up my review and install for the Barricade HD Drop Side Step Bars, available for the '19 and newer Ram 1500. if you're looking for a nice convenient way to get in and out of your vehicle safely and securely every time you can get this right here exclusively at americantrucks.com.
