2004-2008 Ford F150: Model Overview

2004-2008 Ford F150: Model Overview

Seven years is a considerable run for any body style. Ford hit the market hard with the redesign that lasted from 1997-2003, but it knew the time was up on the prior redesign. Ford showcased the F-series redesign at the 2003 North American International Auto show. The face-lift wasn’t all that game changing for this version of the F150 though. It may be easily distinguishable from the 10th generation, but you could see Ford kept some styling cues. The shape is still a bit rounded in the front end, but it was a bit more angular and defined. It was almost as if the F150 spent some time at the gym getting into shape.

With the various styles of 04-08 F150 available, distinguishing yourself from the pack is simultaneously easier and more difficult. You may accidentally make your truck look similar to an existing sub-model, or succeed in creating something no one has ever seen before. With careful selection of exterior trim pieces, your F150 can be one of a kind.

2004-2008 Ford F150 Engines

Getting into shape is more than good looks. The same three engine options available in Gen 10 made their way into round 11, but the engines aren’t exactly the same. They were boosted in power and performance, and helped the full-sized Ford power along as though it had been running sprints in preparation for a major showdown.

Also, the Flex-fuel technology was introduced to the 5.4 liter. That was a revolutionary step for the world of high-powered engines. You could get the best of both worlds when it comes to fuel economy and power output.

The following engines were available for the 2004-2008 Ford F150:

  • 4.2 L Essex V6 (202 hp @ 4,350 rpm 260 lb-ft @ 3,500 rpm)
  • 4.6 L Triton V8 (231 hp @ 4,750 rpm 293 lb-ft @ 3,500 rpm)
  • 5.4 L Triton V8 (300 hp @ 5,000 rpm 365 lb-ft @ 3,750 rpm)

2004-2008 Ford F150 Transmission

The 11th generation of the F150 was a lot more powerful, and it would need to be backed by a reliable transmission to help it motor on. Though it typically came dressed with an automatic, different transmission options were available:

  • 4-speed automatic
  • 6-speed automatic
  • 5-speed manual

2004-2008 Ford F150 Cab Options

The cab options available on this F150 were nothing different than anything else. Of course, as America’s number one truck, Ford had to distinguish it from the competition. One of the ways they did this was by renaming the cab styles they used for their trucks.

A standard cab is a basic two door; the Supercab is a wider cab option with smaller rear doors like an extended cab; and the Supercrew is a full four-door crew cab.

2004-2008 Ford F150 Trim Levels

XL 2004-2008 F150: Despite taking the place of the base model option for the F150, the XL was a respectably equipped trim package. You could pick up all three cab options in this configuration with all three bed sizes. Seating options were a bit limited, but you could find your XL fitted with all three engines. The smaller two were equipped with the manual transmission.

XLT 2004-2008 F150: Here again we find the XLT was a step above the XL trim. The same powertrain and cab options would follow along on this step up. The major difference was instead of bucket seats or a bench option being tied to the front, the XLT was fitted with a 40/20/40 bench seat for the front.

Lariat 2004-2008 F150: As we climb the totem pole some options start to fall off. The Lariat came with only the 5.4 V8 backed by an automatic transmission. If you were hoping to get a standard cab you’d be out of luck when it comes to the spruced up chromed out Lariat, but you could still grab yourself a Supercab or Supercrew.

STX 2004-2008 F150: In the name of simplicity the STX was an automatic truck dressed with all three engine options. Seating could vary from a 40/20/40 or bucket seats for the front depending on the year. This trim package was only available to the shorter two of the three cabs.

FX2 2004-2008 F150: The idea of two-wheel drive trucks is a turn off for some people, but Ford saw the value in offering a respectable trim option for these pickups. The FX2 could come equipped with either a manual or automatic trans and only front bucket seats. It seems the number two is the focal point of this trim package as you would only have two engine options and two cab options: the 4.7 or 5.4 V8s and the Supercab or Supercrew options.

FX4 2004-2008 F150: Despite the similar name, the FX4 was a little different from the FX2, and that’s not just because it’s for four-wheel drive trucks. The cab options were the same, but you had more seating options to work with. Namely the choice between a 40/20/40 front bench or bucket seats. You could also only get the FX4 with the 5.4 V8.

Harley-Davidson 2006-2008 F150: Naturally the Harley-Davidson edition of the 10th generation was a smash hit, and Ford would be silly not to bring it back for its next model run. The supercharged engine option didn’t make a comeback, so mainly this was just an appearance package available for Supercab and Supercrew trucks.

King Ranch 2004-2008 F150: Richard King, who established the 825,000-acre “King Ranch” in Texas back in 1853, is a household name for Ford guys. This trim package is for 5.4 V8 powered crew cab trucks. This option came with an appearance package and leather seats to pay tribute to the working man who deserves something nice.

2008 Limited F150: The limited is a luxury-based package that did more to change the appearance. This option was only available to full Supercrew trucks with a 5.4 V8. The bumpers were painted to match the body; bucket seats and chrome wheels were also used to set this trim package apart from the lower levels.

2008 60th Anniversary F150: Ford never forgets where it came from. This trim package celebrates the 60-year milestone of the F150’s lifespan. This was a luxurious rendition of the XLT trucks that featured custom wheels and seating. The outside was dressed with an appearance package that give the truck a touch of class and heritage to those who came before it.

Foose and Saleen F150: Yeah, it’s kind of a bummer the lighting didn’t make it to this generation of F150s. That’s not to say you couldn’t get your hands on a high powered classic from this lineup. Foose and Saleen offered their takes on this truck, both of which could be fitted with a supercharged V8 and a custom appearance package that would separate your truck from the rest.
