Simple installation for anyone.
So, if you're looking for a really affordable and very well-built side step bar for your '09 to '18 Ram to make getting in out of your cab a little bit easier, you should be checking out Steel Craft's 3-inch Blackout Series side step bars that we've got on our Ram today. At around the $200 price point, the price is pretty tough to beat alone. However, I'm happy to say, these are actually made out of 304 stainless and they feature a really tough black powder coat. So, these are made out of the best steel that you can find and they have one of the best finishes that you can throw on a side step bar making them one of the most durable and one of the most rugged that you can currently install on your Ram. Besides how well built these are and how affordable they are, I'm actually a fan of the three inch-step because I think it's a perfect middle of the road option. It's not so small that you get a little bit of coverage or not enough, but it's not so big that it's really imposing or in your face. As that Blackout series name implies, I really like the understated look of this thing. You also get two grip pads underneath each door so you won't have to worry about this thing causing you to slip or fall even if it is wet or there's rain or snow. Besides all those cool things, it also installs very easily. Should be able to get this done at home with basic hand tools in the driveway. Shouldn't take you more than an hour for either side. And for that reason, I'm gonna give the install a very easy one out of three wrenches on my difficulty meter. So, if you like the price and you like the quality, and I'm certainly a big fan, you should stick around, I'm gonna show you guys how to get these installed in just a moment. To install your new side steps, you'll need the following tools, a standard drive ratchet and a 17, 18, and 19-millimeter socket. Optional but helpful tools include a cordless impact and a swivel socket. So, first part of our install, we're gonna tackle our driver's side rear bracket. In order to secure the bracket to the body panel, you're gonna grab one of these bolt and nut plates. You're gonna thread one of these 17-millimeter black bolts through the nut. You're gonna use that as a little handle to fish it through. Once you got it through the hole, you're gonna secure it with one of these plastic retaining clips that I've got in my hand right here. All right, now that we have that bolt and nut plate fished through the hole and retained with the plastic retainer, we can throw our rear-facing bracket on. Throw the bracket on that first stud and then line up the bolt and nut plate and fish one of these 17-millimeter head bolts through with a crush washer and a flat washer. That's gonna secure the bracket. Then on the polished stud that we fished through earlier, you're also gonna secure one of the 19-millimeter nuts from the kit and you're also gonna use one of the larger crush washers and flat washers and then you're gonna tighten everything down. Just grab a 17. All right. Now that we have our rear bracket installed, we're gonna tackle our front bracket. Our front bracket does secure the same way with a minor difference. You're actually using two of the plates in the kit. You're gonna use one of the bolt and nut plates for the hexagon hole and for the oblong hole where the bracket secures, you're gonna grab one of the standalone nut plates. You're also gonna need a plastic retainer for both of these. All right. Once you've got those two studs secured with those plastic retainers on those bolt and nut plates, you can throw your bracket on. Once you throw the bracket on, it's the same process as the rear. You're gonna secure this using two of those flat washers, crush washers, 17-millimeter nut, and a 19-millimeter nut.All right. Now that our front bracket is secured, we can install the support bracket. The support bracket secures using one of the long bolts for the body mounts. Body mount bolts are 18 millimeters so you're gonna need an 18-millimeter socket to pull that bolt. Once you've pulled it, go ahead and throw this bracket up there and then reinstall that bolt. All right. Now that all of our brackets are tightened down, we can install the step itself. Pretty straightforward, just line up the threaded hole of the step with each of the bracket holes and go ahead and throw one of these large 19-millimeter head bolts in there with a crush washer and a flat washer. So, once you got your driver's side bolted up like we just finished, you're gonna do the same exact thing to the passenger side or vice versa depending on how you started. That'll actually wrap up your install. It also wraps up my review of the Steel Craft 3-inch Blackout Series side step bars fitting your '09 to '18 Ram 1500. I'm Travis. Thanks for watching. Stainless Steps with a Distinctive Black Finish. Offering a very crisp, clean look with curved ends, these 3-inch Blackout Series Side Steps combine a slick black powder-coat finish with stainless steel construction, giving your 2009-2018 Ram 1500 a stealthy look while benefiting from the permanence of stainless steel, too. The saddle style step pads are always easily reachable even when you’re climbing into or out of the cab at unusual angles, in poor visibility, with an armload of items, etc. The end caps are welded on so they’ll never go missing, and the ends of the steps are curved so that they won’t catch on passing brush or saplings.
