Hey, guys, Adam here with americantrucks.com and today we're taking a closer look at and installing the Axial Red Smoked LED Tail Lights available for all 2009 to 2018 RAM 1500s. You should be checking out these tail lights if you're looking to ditch the boring factory tail lights for one that is slightly more aggressive and also more modern in its technology. These tail lights here from Axial do keep the same general design as the factory tail lights but you're replacing the factory incandescent bulbs with 17 individual very bright red LEDs. Now, those will act as you're running lights, your turn signals, your hazards and of course your brake lights. You also have two individual accent lights also red LEDs on the side on both your driver and passenger lights. Underneath you'll have your factory reverse light, so you're gonna retain that of course but otherwise the same general shape and design is gonna stay the same. You are also replacing the factory clear bright red chrome design of the tail lights for a dark smoked and red interior housing. Now, the smoked exterior lens is gonna give you that nice aggressive finish at the rear end, darkening things up a bit to look a little bit more stealthy. Now, the interior instead of being that bright red chrome is a deeper, darker red, which personally I do like myself, looks more of a wine red in my opinion. Now, that, of course, is gonna make things a lot darker. But with the LEDs, it's gonna have absolutely no hindrance on the lighting output. All of that lighting output will shine right through with the bright LED technology. Now, the pair here does come in right around 300 bucks, and that's gonna include a one out of three wrench difficulty meter for our install. It's gonna be a direct plug and play, no wiring, no splicing, no cutting, none of that nonsense. All you're gonna do is plug in the LED harness into the factory bulb socket. I'm gonna show you every single step of the process here, it'll take you about 30 minutes from start to finish. What do you say we get started? Tools used in this install include an impact gun or a ratchet and a T-20 Torx bit.All right, first step here for the uninstall, of course, drop your tailgate, you're gonna grab a T-20 Torx bit and remove the two screws holding on your factory tail light from the inside where the tailgate snaps shut. We're gonna get those guys off and pull it off in one piece. All right. So, with those two out of the way, we're just gonna pull straight back and then on the harness, just pinch and disconnect. The same thing on the bottom. From here on the back of our factory tail light we wanna twist the factory tail light bulb and disconnect it and we are gonna have to plug in our new LED into the bulb socket. So, we're gonna have to take the bulb from the base and just wiggle it out of place very gently and set this guy aside. We are going to need this, so we're going to retain that. On the bottom we're gonna twist and disconnect the factory reverse light but we're gonna leave the bulb in there because we're just gonna reuse this entire thing. From here, what we're gonna do is take that factory tail light bulb socket and plug it back into the factory harness. We wanna tackle this first because we wanna take note of where the power and ground wires are on the factory harness before we plug in our new LED. So, let's head back over to the tail lights. Now, on the bottom of the tail light, grab your factory reverse light and we're gonna put that bulb socket in there and just twist her into place to lock it in. All right. So, taking a look at your new LED harness that's already pre-installed into the housing here, you'll see that we have red, green and black wires attached to this harness. Now, you wanna make sure you're lining up the black wire here on the same side as the black wire on your factory harness. You're matching your ground to your ground and then your power to your power. So, when we plug this into the bulb, we wanna make sure that the black is on the same side. All right. So, we have black and black on the left and the power and power on the right. From there, we can twist this guy into the housing to lock it into place. All right. And then just take the harness for your reverse light and plug it in. When that guy's set up, we can install the tail light back into the vehicle. All right. So, now we're just gonna line this guy up to the factory spot, push it in. Now, we can grab the factory Torx screws and tighten them down to the inside. Grab your T-20 Torx socket and tighten these down. All right, now you can repeat on the other side. So, we've got one of our Axial tail lights in place here on our driver side, the factory guy on the passenger and I wanna take you guys through some of the similarities and the differences between the two kits. Let's start with the similarities. Now, for your new Axial tail light, you're keeping the same general layout and design of all the components as you have on your factory taillight. You've got your bigger rectangle here with the brake lights and the running lights, you've got your smaller square here with the reverse light, but you are adding an accent light on the side where normally there are just reflectors. So, as far as similarities go, that is really gonna be the big thing. Differences, however, is really changing the whole technology and the aggressiveness of your tail light. You're changing the factory incandescent bulbs on the passenger side to 17 individual very bright red LEDs. So, you're getting more modern technology, a lot brighter, a lot more attractive, that's gonna shine straight through that smoked lens. Now, that's also a big difference there. You have an acrylic lens that is smoked and a red interior polycarbonate housing. Your factory tail light over there has a clear acrylic lens, but they're very bright, almost red chrome interior polycarbonate housing. So, with the darker red interior and the smoked exterior, it just looks a lot more aggressive, changing up that rear-end design, but keeping that similar OEM layout. So, really, this is gonna be for guys who wanna switch things up to get a more modern technology without going with some crazy different or unique setup from some of the other options in the category.Additionally, you are reusing the factory reverse light bulb, so nothing to change there, you're just twisting the factory one out, putting it into the new one as we saw from that install. So, at the end of the day, nice aggressive look, very bright, attractive LEDs and again, you have that additional accent light on the side to complement things nicely. So, what we're gonna do here is uninstalled the opposite side, put our new ones back into place and we'll wrap things up.That's gonna wrap up my quick overview and install for the Axial Smoked Red LED Tail Lights available for all '09 to '18 RAM 1500s. If I have an SLE trim without the factory LED lights (i.e. i have the normal bulbs), will this work or this only for the higher models that have the factory LEDs. Also will this work without requiring a ground or drilling (i.e does this require resistors that have to be screwed into the truck to retrofit these in?)
These LED lights are offered for the models that have factory LED lights or the models that do not. Be sure to choose the correct one when selecting your fitment. These lights will be a bolt-on design and will not require drilling.
