How to Clean Your Fuel Injector in 6 Easy Steps

Once you decide on new fuel injectors, all you need to know is how to clean a fuel injector in order to keep it performing its best. All you need is a long screwdriver and a fuel injector cleaning kit that you can pick up at an auto supply store. You'll want to follow the directions that come with your cleaning Kit, but the following instructions can give you an idea of how to get the job done.

1. Disable the fuel pump and plug the fuel return line or install a U-tube so the fuel will return directly to the tank.
2. Disconnect the pressure regulator and connect the cleaning kit to the fuel port on the fuel rail.
3. Remove the fuel cap from the gas tank. Then, turn the ignition to ensure that the engine will not turn over.
4. Open the valve on the kit until the fuel pressure reading matches the one for your vehicle.
5. Start the engine to run the cleaning solvent through the injectors and let it run for about five minutes until the engine shuts down.
6. Reset the fuel-pump switch and replace the gas cap. Reconnect the pressure regulator and then start the engine. Check the fuel injectors for proper operation using your long screwdriver as a “stethoscope.”
