FAQ What Are The Best Bug Deflectors & Window Deflectors?

Weathertech RAM Stone & Bug Deflector

1. Are all deflectors custom-designed?

All but 2 of our deflectors are custom-designed for an exact fit onto your vehicle. Besides just fitting perfectly, our deflectors are shaped to follow your vehicle's unique contours, curves, and lines. In fact, they look factory-installed once you mount them.

Not all of our sunroof deflectors are custom-designed, and the reason is straightforward: most sunroofs are the same. Hood shapes and window designs vary dramatically between different vehicles. However, the only real difference between most sunroofs is their width. Before you choose one of these deflectors, make a quick measurement of your sunroof from door to door, not hood to trunk. Choose a size that fits the closest, and always err on the side of the larger rather than smaller.

2. How do bug deflectors keep insects and rocks from hitting my windshield and hood?

A bug deflector uses physics to protect your front-end from big, juicy bugs. It alters your vehicle's aerodynamics so that wind blows over the top of your cabin instead of into your windshield. When bugs fly towards your vehicle, they get picked up and carried away by this air current.

Because rocks and road debris are heavier than insects, they cannot be deflected by airflow alone. That's why bug deflectors are built tough to shield your hood and windshield from direct attacks. Incoming debris smacks into the deflector, ricochets off, and leaves your paint unmarred. One thing to keep in mind is that taller bug deflectors deliver greater coverage and more protection.

3. How do I clean my deflectors?

There are no special precautions to take when cleaning any of our deflectors. Simply scrub them down while you're washing your vehicle, and they'll look as good as new. What's more, many of the bug deflectors feature an ingenious off-the-hood design that allows easy cleaning and waxing under and around them.

4. Will my deflectors be ruined if I go through a carwash?

Absolutely not. All of our deflectors install using either incredibly secure 3M adhesives, nearly invisible clips, or other dependable mounting methods. You can still take advantage of convenient drive-thru carwashes without worrying about losing your deflectors—the same cannot be said about your antenna, though.

5. What are deflectors made of?

The vast majority of deflectors are crafted from high-impact acrylic plastic. The advantages of acrylic are nearly limitless, and the major benefits are its strength to withstand shock, its steadfast durability, and its complete imperviousness to rust. There is also a bug deflector that's made from stainless steel. More than just robust, this deflector is also polished to a dazzling mirror shine. And, this metal matches most chrome trim and wheels, as well as any other stainless steel accessories on your vehicle.

6. How do deflectors mount on my vehicle?

In most instances, deflectors affix firmly onto vehicles using a series of OEM-approved 3M adhesive strips. This secure method takes only minutes to install yet should last beyond the life of your vehicle.

Of course, there are exceptions to the rule. Certain window deflectors do not use adhesives at all. Instead, they fit right into the window grooves on select vehicles. Likewise, our Dual Flap Standard Sunroof Deflector uses hidden clasps to stay in place. And, many of the bug deflectors use a combination of 3M adhesive strips and clips. Some light drilling may be required for certain bug deflectors, but not with any of the window or sunroof deflectors.

7. Can deflectors improve my fuel economy?

Deflectors can definitely play a role in improving your fuel economy. Your vehicle's air conditioner steals energy from your motor. It has to work harder and use more gas or diesel to compensate for the drain. However, many drivers prefer to use the AC instead of rolling down their windows because of the noise, the turbulence, and, if it's raining, the moisture. Window and sunroof deflectors turn down the volume on wind, smooth out rough turbulence, and block rain. That way, you can stay comfortable with the windows down instead of the AC cranked up.

Another enemy to fuel efficiency is drag. This occurs when wind rushes into open windows, hits your rear window, and creates a backward thrust. Your motor must run harder to offset this "anchor effect," and that means more petrol. Window and sunroof deflectors alter your vehicle's aerodynamics, preventing drag before it has a chance to slow you down.
