With traditional air-filled shocks, performance suffers due to changes in temperature and also over time due to moisture that is already in the air. Unlike air, nitrogen doesn't react to changes in temperature and doesn't contain corroding contaminants. Don't trust a traditional shock - only a nitrogen gas charged shock will be there even when the going gets tough.
